Hello!

You can either buy a Ferrari or pay for ahrefs AEO tracking which is wild.

As I understand it - these tools with AEO citations monitoring are just htting AEO searches every 15mins or so to give you results. So they basically just run searches in mass.

Has anyone built a tool/skill where I can do this within my own AI? I assume it can be done with API credits which are much cheaper. Or even better - only push it when I need to and keep it on my paid plan.

I am also interested in this it will be good to have a script which will run the prompts record brands mentioned or cited and log the information over time it will be great if there is a GitHub repository or AI skill which does this free of charge without using any pricey tracking tools.

You could just grab your API from Datafor SEO and put a simple tool that allows you to understand how AI understands your business . You can also prompt for the citations . It's pretty cheap, pay-as-you-go,

SaaS pricing for AEO tracking is absolute daylight robbery. It’s literally just automated search-grounded API calls. You can easily write a 20-line python script using openai or anthropic API with web search, set it up on a local cron job, and log all your domain citations to a JSON file for pennies.

I found a few useful open-source repos for this. I’d start with AI Search Rank Tracking Example Repo. It tracks brand mentions and citations across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini, and can run on a schedule with GitHub Actions. It’s a good starting point if you want to log results over time without paying for a full SaaS tool.
