Where to buy a USA phone number?

Supposedly US SIMs only work within the US territory.

Now let's say I buy a USA eSIM from Europe, I ask: How do I receive verification messages and calls to that number if I don't live in the USA?
The eSIM is working outside USA via Wifi network, not via carrier's signal. I tried that last month and sending/receiving SMS was working well, I didn't try calling.

I didn't know this. Thank you very much for the information.

Another question: I have seen that e-SIMs have plans ranging from 1 month to 3 months. Should I understand that once the plan expires, the number is deactivated?

You can pay the eSIM seller to renew the plan for you, then you can keep the same number but I don't know for how long.

Try Google Voice or Skype for USA numbers that support calls & texts. Also, check out services like Twilio if you need more customization.

I use Hushed, 2ndline and Phone2 for our organization.
Most of them are one time payment and lifetime deals :)

for two way calling where people save your number, google voice and skype both read as voip and a lot of carriers block the outgoing or dump you to spam. if you actually want folks calling you back and saving it, a real us mobile line holds up way better than the app numbers
