Are Expired Domains Still Worth Using for SEO?

I've been looking at expired domains recently and there are still quite a few interesting ones available.
But I'm not sure if they're still worth the effort compared with starting a fresh domain.
For those actually using expired domains, are you still getting good results from them?
If they have good backlinks from highly authoritative relevant websites then yes it might be worth acquiring them.

Expireds can still save you time, but I would research what type of site was ranking before investing bcz unrelated authority is great in tools but doesnt always carry over well.

yes it still works many of our customers using it. make sure the domain is clean and has quality links

You didn't mention your intended use case.
In my experience, for example, fresh domains performed well for botfarm indexing. Some domain zones were better than others. Expired domains, on average, performed much worse, although a few received a massive boost from Google. However, I couldn't determine which metric correlated with those top performers.

It is definitely working for my competitor.

Reverse engineered it and he buys expired blogs, restores them (i think with archivarix) , and then he just uses my content, rewrites it automatically with ai. Outranking me currently. (both on bing and google, while i was dominating page 1 for years.)

He uses this workflow with like 20 sites
Does he links back to his main site or he just just ranks them all and some of them end up in google page 1?

If you try to swap niches or use a domain with hidden foreign spam history, google’s spambrain updates will just suppress the link juice anyway.
Yeah, and the bit that gets people is that you never find out it happened. No notice in Search Console, nothing to appeal. The domain still looks healthy in Ahrefs, because Ahrefs has no idea which of those links Google quietly stopped counting.

I buy these for a living and I reject most of what I look at. First thing I ask is why it dropped. A company that shut down is fine. A domain that has already expired two or three times has been through other people's hands and it usually shows. Then I read the whole Wayback history rather than the last snapshot before it lapsed, and if there is a pharma or foreign language phase sitting anywhere in there I walk, whatever the metrics say.

After that I would rather look at the anchor spread than at DR. Mostly brand and naked URLs, that was a real site. A pile of commercial exact match and someone has already squeezed it.

What actually settles it though is rebuilding the thing, getting it indexed, and watching whether the old URLs pull any impressions back. I had one earlier this year that looked lovely on paper and sat flat at zero for two months, so I wrote it off. Happy to be wrong on that one, but I would rather lose the cost of the domain than build a year of work on top of it.

Although I am learning about expired domains it really depends on the history of the domains and backlinks a domain with a clean history and proper links is worth more than a domain with high metrics only.

Expired domains work great as parasites, and you can build nice buffer sites with them and run two-tier campaigns to them. Start slowly, building tier two links like 50-100 links per day, and it does wonders. I'm speaking from experience, and the expired domain buffer site strategy is one of my goto strategies.

They are worth it in different scenerios, like:
  1. If you want to redirect them to increase your website crawl.
  2. Or you want to create new website on it, for this you should take care of the domain history is it relevant or atleast partial relevant to your niche.
  3. If you realy want to manipulate ranking for really short term.

expired domains can be worth it but the history matters way more than the age or DR. look for a clean backlink profile.

  • Spot on! Many people make the mistake of just checking the domain rating or age, but a clean backlink history without any spam or toxic anchor texts is far more important for long-term success
