Hi. New here. As I was scrolling frontpage I saw about 10 SMM panel ads and marketplace is full of them.. But why do they exist?
I tried googling and answer was basically "fake social image to make social media accounts look better". Is this really it? Does it really not have any other useful functions? It cant have real positive impact on marketing since all social media platforms see that as fake engagement, and it seems like they are all acknowledging that it is just fake views/likes/followers, so why do people buy them? Is it just a noob-trap?

I am not trying to mock anyone here, just trying to learn and understand why it is such a big market.

Not a dumb question at all. Here's the honest breakdown of why the market is so big:

1. Social proof. People judge accounts at a glance. A page with 20 followers looks dead, one with 5k looks established. Some new businesses buy a starter boost so they don't look empty when real visitors land on the page.

2. Reselling. A huge chunk of buyers aren't end users. They buy from a wholesale panel and resell to clients (often small businesses or influencer hopefuls) at a markup. Panels supplying other panels is why you see so many of them.

3. Agencies and freelancers. Some "social media managers" use them to show quick "growth" to clients. Looks good in a monthly report, does nothing for sales.

4. Vanity and status. Plenty of people just want bigger numbers.

The downsides you're picking up on are real:
  • Bought followers don't engage, so your engagement rate drops and the algorithm shows your posts to fewer real people.
  • Platforms regularly purge fake accounts, so numbers drop and you've paid for nothing.
  • It can get accounts flagged or restricted, and it breaks most platforms' terms of service.
  • Brands and sponsors increasingly check follower quality with audit tools, so inflated accounts get caught.
So you're mostly right: it's not marketing, it's cosmetics. Real growth still comes from content, ads and actual community building. The panels exist because there's demand for looking popular, not because it works long term.

they can be useful if you use them right. Adding some views, comments, likes, shares ect does help get organic reach if you find a panel that has quality accounts. if the smm panel is a reseller of a reseller of a reseller, the quality will probably be bad, meaning the follows likes ect will get removed or hurt your account's reputation.
