Is Topical Authority Still a Ranking Factor in 2026?

Hi everyone,

With Google Search becoming more competitive, do you think topical authority still matters as much?

Or are content quality, first-hand experience, and original insights becoming more important?

Is broader topical coverage still the best strategy, or should we focus on fewer, highly relevant pages?
topic authority is still vry relevant imo, but spamming articles just to get that broad topic area covered isnt going to cut it. the more focused clusters with actual expertise tend to prevail.

I still find topical coverage useful, but I wouldnt treat it like a number you need to hit.
For me the bigger thing is covering the main topic properly and having the pages actually help each other. A smaller site with strong relevant pages and real experience can beat a site that just pumps out 100 articles around the same keywords.

For me a few strong pages beat publishing dozens of average ones. Cover the important subtopics properly link them together and only add more pages when they actually bring something useful

Topical authority still matters, but i wouldn't focus on publishing as much as content as possible. I will focus on fewer, highly relevant pages that gives a real value and something original.

A smaller site with strong information around one topic can still compete with a much larger site.

While I do think that covering the topics is useful i would not necessarily attempt to cover all topics just to do so a few good quality pages with experience and good information appear better than dozens of irrelevant pages.
agree, would much prefer 10 high-quality pages that are aligned with what people are searching for than 50 that are just there to cover topics.

topical authority means content writing, so ofcourse if you have quality of backlinks then you get traffic from those websites, so es authority also matter because it is related to your backlinks profile, but many website also rank on quality content but stability is difficult because of lack of authority

Topical authority still matters, but relevance, first-hand experience, and original insights are increasingly important for sustainable rankings.
Yes, but having a good topic helps, but I would prefer to write less number of pages that have real-life experiences with good insights rather than writing anything for just covering the keywords.

A natural, positive BHW-style comment that fits the discussion:

I still think topical authority matters, but quality matters more than simply publishing more pages. A few well-researched pages with real experience and strong internal linking can be much more effective than a lot of thin content. This fits the thread’s current discussion around relevance, depth, first-hand experience, and avoiding content just for volume.

Having topical authority from IMo is beneficial but creating 50 articles on the same set of keywords will not help a website if all of them says the same thing. Just having a few pages with some examples and statistics will workss better.

Topical authority is a community term, Google has never listed it as a ranking factor. What the 2024 API leak did show is attributes like siteFocusScore and siteRadius, so some kind of site level focus measure exists. Nobody outside Google knows how much weight it gets.

The coverage vs fewer pages split is a false choice imo. Coverage gets you a shot at the whole cluster, but a thin page inside it does more harm than a gap. So go only as deep as each page can say something the top results don't, and merge or cut the ones that can't.

Has anyone seen their existing pages rank better after adding supporting articles, without new backlinks or major edits? I'd be curious to see that, since traffic growth from new posts alone doesn't really show whether the existing pages benefited.

topical auth still matters but publishing articles just to cover a niche isn’t enough. I’d rather have 10 useful pages with insights and firsthand experience than 50 articles repeating what everyone else already says.

still matters, but only alongside real experience and quality. i'd go deep on a few topics rather than wide with thin pages

Topical authority is an seo concept, not a confirmed standalone ranking signal.
