Expired domain or fresh domain?

Expired domains save time if the backlink profile directly matches your target niche and is clean. For long-term branding, a fresh domain avoids any legacy penalties or unnatural anchor footprints.

If you’re starting a new project today would you go with a fresh domain or an expired domain with some existing backlinks?

Go with a fresh domain. If the expired domain has a clean history and genuinely relevant backlinks, it may give you a head start, but I wouldn’t buy just for its DR/DA or backlink count.

Comes down to what the project actually is. If it needs to pay within a few months and the name does not matter, expired every time. If it is meant to be a brand you keep for years, a clean name you actually like beats a stronger domain called something random.

The decent expired ones rarely have names you would pick for a real business, which people forget right up until they are stuck with one.

i surely go with clean expired domain with quality links and clean anchor profile

If the expired domain has backlinks that are good and from highly authoritative relevant websites then I would go with the expired domain choice.

I’d usually go with a fresh domain unless the expired domain has a clean, relevant history and genuinely useful backlinks. The history matters more than simply having an existing backlink profile.

For those seeking a fast start while bypassing the sandbox period, an expired domain remains the ultimate shortcut. Thorough vetting of the Wayback Machine history and backlink profile is essential to avoid toxic penalties.

I'd probably go with a fresh domain unless the expired domain has a clean history, strong topical relevance and genuinely useful backlinks. Aged links can help, but I wouldn't choose an expired domain just for the backlink count-quality and relevance matter much more.

I will choose fresh domain for new projects, only i will prefer the expired domain only if it has genuine relevant history and clean backlink profile. For a long-term brand, I’d rather build on a clean domain and earn relevant authority naturally.

Almost went the expired route myself, but SmirkSmith's backlink-count warning stopped me cold. The one I checked had anchors all over the place.
