A recent report is showing that Google AI overviews on branded queries more than tripled during September. Daily tracking of branded keywords on all markets/devices shows the share of queries triggering an AI overview rising massively over the month. Early September sat mostly in the mid 20% to mid 30% range, with major jumps later in the month (eg. ~57% on the 18th, ~69% on the 26th, peaking at ~90% on the 27th, and staying high around 80%+ through the 29th): https://www.demandsphere.com/blog/branded-ai-overviews-september-2026/

It's increasingly vital that LLMs know about your brand and what you represent/offer, along with all those reputation signals.

That jump lands right in the middle of the spam update rollout, so it could be a test as much as a new normal.

If it sticks, a branded search becomes the place people read a summary of you before they ever click.

Did their data show it holding past the 29th?

How beneficial is this to a brand? I would prefer a user lands on my business website and get to learn about it from browsing through than reading some AI overview that might not even be positive.

Imagine AI recommending a competitor to a visitor that searched for your brand name.

Good example. Entity architecture and consistent brand signals across relevant, authoritative sites play a big role in helping ai systems understand and trust a brand.

Thanks for sharing!

This is part of what I have been trying to achieve with what I've been doing over the past month now...

More brand visibility and a stronger connection to the person behind it, so both go hand in hand.

Win win situation, the way I see it : )

If AI Overviews are appearing for a large share of branded searches, I’d audit the sources Google is using, especially third-party pages, reviews, social profiles, and other pages that influence how the brand is described.

I remember the threads here on BHW from 2022 saying this would never happen.

Back then I already said this will happen. Its the logical consequence. Right now they are in the mid of the transition. They will fully replace the classic Google search.

Thats why in the past few months they kept releasing Gemini Flash models one after another (3.5, 3.7, 3.8) instead of Pro models that can compete with Claude Fable or GPT 6 Astra. Their focus is on trying to make it cheaper and faster, so they can replace it with Google search. They are playing a different game.

I too noticed the same trend. Branded searches getting AI Overviews this often is pretty significant
it makes brand visibility and what Google pulls into the answer as important as the traditional blue links

If AI Overviews keep appearing on branded queries, ranking your own website at number one may no longer be enough. I’d pay more attention to controlling the information Google can find across trusted third-party sources, not just optimizing the brand’s website.

Yeah your preference is mine too, but this is the way things are going now. Poisoning LLMs to equate competitors brands to your own is already a tactic in play.

I noticed this too, but it's not a thing to be too happy about. AI Overview will soon cover all the searches.

I prefer people visiting my website and social media directly than AI causing confusion for my targeted audience.
