Your website didn't gain authority during it sandbox time, focus on reducing bounce rate and extend visitors time on the site, this will increase it trust signal to google, and increase it appearance in the SERP and use other factors to gain rank,
I'm just interesting on your niche do you mind PM me about it.

Traffic seems improving, but the search queries I am recieving are quite bad. They are not the same genre as I used to recieve.

It does give me hope. But when things started to finally improve on google's end, CF did me very dirty.

I was using their free database and had billions of daily row reads. For context 1 query can have multiple row reads and I had very unoptimized queries, where some used to scan millions of rows to do joins per user request. CF always had free limit of 5 million but never enforced it for years. They somehow decided to enforce this like yesterday.

I did lot of query optimizations and bought my usage to few 40-50 million (from 10-20 billions) but that would still blow up my site in middle of day. They have a paid 5$ plan, but the monthly database limits were still not practically useful (30 billion a month). After spending ~2 days of engineering to optimize the queries and exploring their plans, I decided to move to my own server which is a far cheaper option. There is also per per use add on if I went with cloudflare that compulsory. But since these guys disrupted my daily job, I could not trust their pay per use model, who knows if they decide to spam me with legit looking bot traffic to get some extra $$. Plus any bad query / mistake I did could burn out monthly database limit triggering pay per use.

I am bringing this up because this will cost me dearly in coming weeks or months...

These fail rates for server connectivity will impact your sites ranking definetly

Had one more downtime and it seems google has decided to take down my site/page for the tail query that was doing well.. It could be due to new algo has a monthly refresh cadence or something, or it could be this downtime or this tail query is no longer trendy.. :( I see new tail query but that is poor.

But, bing and other search engines are still showing love, and users coming to the site are sticking well too. I added lot of metrics inside the site and see plenty internal traffic like people searching / browsing content throughout the day...

Fighting GSC is a tall order and I would not fight it via some hacks. Rather I am going for gradual improvements and deepening content knowledge base. I did significant improvements to improve the metrics over weekend like adding image caching, improving recommendation algorithms, service restart crons, couple of UX features, authwalling some of those features, etc.

Next step would linking with some good adult affiliate networks.

Suggestions are welcome :)

Those resource issues could also matter if Googlebot was hitting 5xx/429 responses or struggling to crawl the site.

yeah, suffered one more 1hr downtime today and improved crons and improving vitals

Finally some good news - imrovements are paying off.

GSC still hates me and it's fine. I finally realized that stopping new / sloppy content on site, and putting some of working slop behind noindex was a big mistake that was actually driving customers away.

To anyone who got affected by the update, this might seem contradictory, given everyone and and even AI agents suggested - we should urgently keep scaled out content away from sitemap, get the pages de-indexed to clean up domain's image.
Since it did not work for 1.5 months, I am resumed the scaled approach, and it definitely seems to help improve user retention (along with improving website metrics / speed / etc).

I am still on low side when it comes to Tier 1 CPA markets because of unoffcial GSC ban. and haven't put any ads yet. They feel risky and the focus is on improving user retention fruther to derisk that.

How are things working for others?

The managed challenge is the one I'd check first, Googlebot gets challenged too and you see it as crawl errors in the Crawl Stats report, host status for those days. 20-30k pages dropped at once on a tube site is also enough on its own, thin embed pages with rewritten text all look alike. Removing from sitemap doesnt remove them, they still get crawled.

Thanks, googlebot was always taken care off (except once in Aug), I can see it's showing fine in nginx logs in vps. Only useless bots/scrappers like semrush are behind managed now. I had copied ones from both from sitemap and added noindex in their meta header, for 30+ days and it did not help at all to recover rank. So I gave up on google and restored them back so atleast other engines don't miss them.

301 redirects pass Scaled Content penalties straight to the new domain. To recover in the adult niche, fix template page bloat, improve page uniqueness beyond scraped embed titles, and launch on a fresh domain without direct redirects.

Thanks for suggestion. I will ramp up ux more and give it a try.
