Instagram reels appear bad even when uploaded in HD

So I've been looking over the content being posted for an apparel brand which is a client of mine. The reels appear good when they're on device, but when uploaded on Instagram they seem to lose alot of quality. Competitors are posting similar content and theirs seem to be levels above ours mainly because it loads in full quality.

I researched a bit and saw that Instagram deprioritizes bandwidth for accounts which aren't popular...is there any way to overcome this without paying for followers or anything like that? Or even if there is some blackhat method id like to understand

Part of what you read is actually real, and it works in your favour here. Instagram openly applies cheaper encoding to videos with low views and re-encodes them at higher quality as views grow (Adam Mosseri confirmed this himself). So it's per-video performance, not account popularity - a new reel starts on the cheap encode and only graduates when it gets traction. There is no blackhat fix for that, and botting views to force it risks your client's account for no real gain.

What you can control is what you hand their encoder:

1. Export 1080x1920, not 4K. Instagram recompresses 4K uploads aggressively and they almost always look worse than a clean 1080p file.
2. H.264, 10-16 Mbps bitrate, 30fps. Most of the quality loss I see comes from editors exporting at 3-5 Mbps by default.
3. Turn on Settings > Media quality > "Upload at highest quality" and upload on stable WiFi - the app throttles upload quality on poor connections.
4. Don't let the in-app editor re-encode. Add captions/text before export.

Also check one thing before blaming the upload: compare the same reel in a desktop browser vs in the app. Sometimes the app player downshifts while the file itself is fine.
 
Hd content doesn t mean always good quality. Depends how you create it, where u post it from and I believe there is a setting inside if regarding quality

There is no blackhat method to it. Just export natively at 1080p (30fps, H.264) and ensure "Upload at highest quality" is toggled on in the app's data settings to give your reels the best possible baseline quality. Try this, and the quality should improve.
 
Turn on ‘Upload at highest quality’ in IG settings and test exporting at 1080x1920 instead of feeding IG a massive 4K file. IG is going to re-encode it either way.

tbh start by exporting in 1080x1920, H.264, maximum quality, since IG always encodes everything nd the 4K one sometimes look worse

i would check the editing process first before blaming the account. instagram compresses its videos quite heavily. moreover, it could be even more compressed if the file is initially compressed. upload the original 1080p video, set a normal bitratte nd tick the option upload at highest quality.do not download nd re upload the video through some other application.

TBF, the re-encoding process can be the cause behind this issue. I would simply upload the original 1080p video without any re-encoding and with the highest quality upload option of Instagram.
 
Thanks for the inputs guys, I'll try these out. The upload at highest setting is always on on all my accounts, so it either has to be the editing or the bandwidth throttling....I'll try the fake saves and shares method to see whatsup

And this is a recent problem which I'm facing because the quality of the content matters alot for the niche of my client.
 
Check the upload quality setting in Instagram and turn on the option for uploading at the highest quality.
 
First check the upload quality settings in insta, change it to "upload in highest quality". Next thing is, check your export settings when exporting the video. Insta always prefers reels in 9:16 ratio, with a bit rate around 25 to 30 mbps (this matters the most to avoid pixelation).
 
oh guys I think I over reacted, I was able to achieve really good quality, here's what I did

Recorded source material in 4k 60fps
Imported footage into desktop capcut, slightly increased saturation and sharpness to adjust for insta compressions
Exported in 4k, 30fps, high bitrate
Imported footage into the edits app

Just exported into 4k, 30fps and posted directly to instagram through the edits app, now I have great quality in those reels :D

usually its more about export settings than the account try uploading 100x1920 high bitrate and avoid recompressing video before uploading that

Yes, with a complete process, you can produce high-quality and effective videos. Many people sometimes overlook this, resulting in dull and uninteresting videos.
 
When exporting the video, check whether you set it to 1080p or 2K review your export settings or check the file size before looking into the platform itself.

but HD does not necessarily guarantee that Instagram would maintain the same level of quality.in my case i would look into the original file bittrate nd exporting settings, especially when it comes to videos that had been processed with multiple applications before being uploaded.it may also be helppful to try the same clip using another profile.

TBH i would run a few tests on the export first before saying any thing about the reaches of the account insta compression is really random per photo.

feed ur bot with likes and comments using cheap smm panels for a week in order to create a fake engagement rate and then meta will gives uhh high bandwidth transcoding slots right away tbh
 
uploading in hd not always mean instagram will keep the same quality there are a few things that can affect the final result like the export settings the video format and even the upload settings inside the app check those first instead of trying to boost the account with fake followers
