I have a domain expiring in a few days, and I went in to renew it, and since I'm doing it I decided to extend all my domains by a few years. All the sites are .com

With a 20% coupon, you pay $14.78 per year. Just 1-2 years ago it was around $10 per domain.

I'm seriously thinking of moving. I see porkbun (not fond of the name) and Cloudflare being recommended. Cloudflare is cool, all my sites are on/behind Cloudflare.

What other LEGITIMATE/ESTABLISHED and affordable options are there? I'm planning on extending all my sites to 2030, so if I do move, I wanna move, pay, and forget.

What do you guys think?

Yea, I'm not sure how things compare with the other registrars right now, but I had the same reaction recently when renewing some of my older .com domains.

I've been with Namecheap for 16 years and honestly never had any real issues, so I've always been happy with the services themselves.

But the renewal prices have gone up enough that, like you, I'm starting to think about moving them elsewhere over the next few years.

Remember you don't get support with cloudflare which is one of the reason they offer cheap. Namecheap you do. I don't get your problem? Can't you remember when .coms were like $6.99 full price!!? :D Everything goes up dude. All registers are trying, but even icann are putting their prices up.

If you think an asset signpost for a year is expensive at $15, then somebody has some domain trimming to do! :D

$0.04 a day for your site and business name? 10 years and guaranteed they are at $25-30 a domain lol

I've been with Namecheap for almost as long as you. I went to renew today, and already filled up my cart and decided how many years to add to each domain etc. But then I stopped. Bro, come on, wtf is this price. I could probably get the same years elsewhere for like $100 bucks less.

I'm thinking Cloudflare. They are legit, probably more legit than Namecheap all things considered. And all my sites are on Cloudflare already, so it's not like I'm moving into unknown territory. And who knows, maybe as a paying customer Cloudflare also gives me some more options for my, well, Cloudflare usage for my sites. Not that I care, I don't know of anything on Cloudflare I need other than what I already get for free.

I asked ChatGPT, and looked around online. Paypal accepted, private whois free, price $10.44 (can't say for sure if that's the price obviously, but everybody seems to be mentioning that number).

Let's see what others are gonna say. For now I'm tempted to either pay namecheap and forget about it all until 2030, or switch to Cloudflare.

Ok, I didn't know that.

But tell me, what kind of support? In almost 15 years I have never contacted Namecheap for any support. Not once.

The domains just sit there, i renew when time comes, and that's the end of it.

I see on Reddit that Namecheap has been sold/bought by some... Namecheap became majority-owned by a private-equity investment firm
And Cloudflare, well...

Namecheap

  • Private company
  • Majority stake acquired by CVC Capital Partners in 2025
  • PE ownership can bring a stronger focus on financial returns/costs
Cloudflare

  • Public company
  • Founders retain very substantial voting control
  • Large institutional shareholders
  • Significant debt, but also substantial liquidity and operating cash generation
  • Registrar is only one part of a much larger infrastructure/security/CDN business

Cloudflare looking better and better. But we need more replies.

Please take a look at https://tld-list.com/tld/com

You should be able to see both Transfer and renewal pricing for a variety of registrars there.

To address your Namecheap issue, this is a classic "disrupt oneself" strategy.

Namecheap is well established with millions of domains managed and can therefore get away with charging a premium on renewal. A few dollars a domain translates to millions in revenue.

But at the same time, providers like Cloudflare and Porkbun and Sav etc. have been undercutting it in terms of pricing for a long time now.

To mitigate this, rather than reduce pricing on their own portal, they launched spaceship.com - a child brand.

You will find much much better pricing on there. Even better than Cloudflare in some instances.

As a personal opinion, I am just not able to trust Cloudflare with my domains. DNS yes, proxy yes, workers yes, even database to some extent - just not domain registration.

In terms of my own usage, it is spread across.

- Porkbun
- Sav
- Spaceship
- Dynadot
- Namesilo

I was hoping you'd reply, I know you don't fuck around.

So you spread them around instead of keeping them all in one place.

What's the deciding factor? And why are you not able to trust Cloudflare with your domains?

You can try spaceship.com/domains

Yes, I have always been the scale horizontally kinda guy. Helps keep my anxiety low.

Price mostly. Renewals for me happen every month, in clusters. So first week of every month, I usually look at the upcoming renewals for the month and spend a few minutes looking at the best available pricing. If I can get decent transfer pricing, I run transfers. If the existing registrar gives me a good enough price, I simply renew there itself.

Similarly I own quite a few io and ai domains and I follow the same pattern for them.

As for why I am unable to trust Cloudflare with my domains, I really have no answer to that. I do have 3 domains in my CF account. I just never take it into consideration during renewals, for some reason.

Danm common guys, why you all jumping ship? They'll put their prices up, and noobs like me who need live chat for DNS help will be toast! lol :D

Also cloudflare went down more often this year than name cheap! thats got to be worth something no? :)

Cloudflare has too many settings for me, i have it for domain protection, and that at first was enough hassle with domain internal redirection error or something at the time. that was enough to put me off.

Am i turning into a boomer guys?? :D

Yes spaceship also consider unstoppable domains and cosmotown all are equally good and cheap.

idk
i still hate porkbun and dont trust them enough.

idk what more settings you need as a domain provider
you buy a domain
set the privacy, set the dns, set a few firewall and boundaries and auto renew
and you are set until you wanna transfer out or change DNS

Another one I have been using and never had any problem with is sav.com

Spaceship is just so much better. I'm moving away from Namecheap domains to them.

To be honest i'm quite conservative when it comes to changing service providers, the only reason i would change is if i get like a really huge increase in the price.
I also have a .com at namecheap, and here are the prices for the last 4 years:
Screenshot-1.png

As you can see the increase is ~1$ per year, i mean if i look at the prices of regular groceries, some products have a bigger increase in price.
This week i also need to renew this domain, the price i will pay is 18.68$, basically the same price i paid last year.

I never had any issues with Namecheap, i won't switch from a provider that works fine for me to a new one just because of 1$/year.
