Do citations still do anything for map pack rankings, or is it just NAP consistency now?

Been going back and forth on this one. Every local guide still says build citations, but the things i see actually moving map pack positions are reviews and the GBP itself.

So do citations still push rankings on their own, or are they only there so your NAP matches everywhere and nothing conflicts?

If you still build them, do you stick to the big directories only or bother with the small niche ones too?

I believe that citations do have value mostly due to their consistency and use in establishing the business via relevant directories however i would not consider them as a sole factor for rankings within the Map Pack instead, I would go with the GBP reviews and citations.

I still build the main citations but mostly for consistency and trust. For map pack movement reviews and the GBP seem to have a lot more impact in my experience.

although I will still cite the major NAPs consistently, I must say that I would rather go with GBP and reviews than the same busines listed in all the directorie.

Yes, Citations do help when starting with link building.

If you can get yourself listed on yelp, bbb, angie then it will be way more powerful than the others.

But don't leave the other ones because that's important too, you want your business listed on everywhere.

You can still build citations, but focus on the major directories and relevant local or niche sites. They help keep business details consistent, but focusing more on GBP optimization, reviews, and quality relevant links works well for Map Pack rankings.

That makes sense. I will still keep the citations consistent, as they help maintain accurate and consistent business information across the web.

They no longer drive rankings on their own. Their role is largely limited to NAP consistency and establishing initial entity trust, while reviews and GBP activity are now the true needle movers.

Citations still matter, but mostly as a trust/consistency layer rather than the thing that pushes you into the 3-pack.
I’d do the big directories plus the relevant niche ones, then spend more time on GBP, reviews, and landing pages.

although I keep trying to creat citations, I do not believe that they will be able to help me rank my map pack. I'm going to use citations for NAP and entities, focusing on GBP and reviews.

built the big ones once for consistency and left it. never saw a citation move a map position on its own. reviews and the profile moved it. the small niche directories i skip now

I’d still use citations, but more for consistent business signals and overall local prominence than expecting every citation to directly move the Map Pack. Google says local prominence can be influenced by information across the web, including directories and links.
