Does digital PR actually move rankings or just look good in a report

Digital PR gets talked about as the clean way to earn links now. Big sites, real journalists, nothing to hide.

What I never see is anyone showing the rankings moved after a campaign. Lots of screenshots of the coverage though. Has anyone here run one and seen real movement on money pages?

Digital PR can help, but don't expect every campaign to move rankings directly.

The value can also come from getting relevant links, brand exposure, and referral traffic, so I’d judge the campaign on more than just keyword positions.

With introduction of trend of AI search, digital PR plays vital role to get mentions and citations in AI Overviews and AI Mode. There are good authority PR websites which offer backlinks. Gaining authoritative backlinks for your domain help build visibility and domain authority. These all will lead to improvement in "Share of Authority" and "Share of Voice".

Most of that coverage points at the homepage, and a big chunk of it is either nofollow or the same syndicated story republished across a dozen sites. So the money page never really feels it, which is why the report looks great and the rankings sit still.

If anything shifts it is the domain as a whole, and only if you then pass that down internally to the pages you actually care about.

Yes, that’s right. Just having coverage doesn’t make it the KPI.

An effective Digital PR campaign is one that aligns itself with SEO results, including relevant referring domains, authority flow to target pages, entity recognition, and ranking/organic traffic movements.

I have found that PR campaigns are more effective when the story is crafted from the perspective of the keywords and landing pages that matter.

the trick would be in differentiating the PR impact from the rest of the factors present on the website while the visibility and link building is easily documented through screenshots of the media coverage it may take some time to see the impact on rankings, depending on how exactly these links are placed.

i’ve seen PR links help but the impact is usually easier to notice when the campaign earns relevant links that support an already solid site i’d track rankings organic clicks and assisted conversions before and after the campaign rather than judging success from media coverage or link counts alone

to be honest i have witnessed public relations make an impact, but in most cases it were an indirect one it was the secondary benefits from what follows.

I’ve seen digital PR help with rankings, but I wouldn’t judge it from coverage screenshots alone.
The real value comes from relevant links, authority, and where those links point.
It can be useful, but results vary by campaign and niche. :)

Building on what @Mr.Dollar said. since a lot of PR links land on the homepage and do not point to the money page directly, I think the part people miss is what you do internally after the coverage lands.

If the PR link points to the homepage, I would add an internal link from there to the money page, with anchor text that makes sense for what the campaign was about. that gives Google another clear path to the page you actually want to rank.
Otherwise you end up with a nice looking PR report and not much movement on the page you actually care about.

+1 PR basically to increase brand awareness. It will not impact directly (sometimes works if topic very relevant and they have a lot of traffic). When brand awareness increase, it will make a trust of our product, if the audience know our product the brand keyword will increase and give traffic

Do follow links from strong, relevant publications can move money pages when the article points to the right URL with a natural keyword in the context. The complication is that many top-tier sites only offer nofollow links, so their value is often stronger for brand visibility and authority than for direct ranking movement. Brand keywords and money-page keywords should be tracked separately because campaigns can improve both, but not through the same type of link.

This has also crossed my mind the coverage may look good but it wo not necessarily tell you if the campaign had an impact on the target pages at all it would be interesting to see some examples where the link was directed to a money page and ranking was measured before and after the campaign.

In all honesty PR can seem vry impressive without really helping the rankings at all. i would monitor the relevance of the referring page and the impressions of the money page.

yes, I have experienced PR working for me even before but I know that I would have been more interested to find out whether the link I was led to ended up at the money page.

Based on the experience gained above i am inclined to believe that relevance and quantity of links earned have the largest impact on the result would be interesting to see the results in longer term
