Expired domain or fresh domain?

For a serious long term project I’d still take a fresh domain most of the time.

Expired can give you a head start, but only if the history is clean, niche is relevant and the backlinks are actually still worth something. Too many expireds look good on metrics but have spammy anchors or dead links behind them.

For testing or faster launches though, a good expired can still be worth it.

Yes totally agree same case with expired domains some of them have a great metrics but when you check their backlinks you realize it’s not worth buying do you check expired domain’s history and anchors manually?

You can download the backlinks and anchor text report for the expired domain and have a quick scan. It's not possible to check every backlinks manually, but seeing the list in an excel sheet gives a clear view.

that’s a good start by glancing over the backlink and anchor text report one can easily notice a lot of suspicious things tell me what do you check first when looking at such reports: anchor text referring domains or something else?

The backlinks alone wouldn’t be enough for me to buy it. I’d check what the domain was actually used for.

Exactly the domain history matters a lot do you usually check Wayback first?

Fresh for the money site, every time. Expired domains carry a history you cannot fully see and I have had two go sideways months later for reasons baked in before I bought them. Where expired makes sense is as a supporting site, where a bad surprise costs you one buffer instead of the project. My setup is exactly that: fresh domain as the main site, a few exact match domains with real content linking to it, and the automated volume pointed at those buffers, never at the main domain. A bad buffer gets swapped. You cannot swap the money site.

I should go for fresh unless the expired domain has a clean, relevant history and genuinely strong backlinks those are the ones that can still give you a head start.

If you’re starting a new project today would you go with a fresh domain or an expired domain with some existing backlinks?

I look on fresh domain unless the expired domain has a genuinely relevant history and clean backlink profile
existing backlinks can be useful, but DR/DA alone isn't enough I'd check the old niche, anchor text, referring domains, historical content,

Start with a fresh domain unless you find an authority kind of domain.

I think it all depends on the history of the expired domain old links may be beneficial but i would first find out what the niche is, how good the link quality is and whether or not there is a problem with the domains history in a long term project
i prefer to have a clean domain over one that’s expired but has more backlinks.

For a new project, I’d consider both but an expired domain only makes sense if the backlink profile and history are genuinely clean and relevant.

Otherwise, I’d rather start fresh and build authority naturally than inherit years of unrelated or spammy signals.

Definitely, an expired domain with clean history
If you can establish topical relevance over time, I think it's a good match

in the case of an extensive project i would recommend choosing a completely new domain unless i discovver an expiring one which has a completely clean history. backlinks may be quite appealing. however, there is no point in having them if they do not correspond to the content of the new site anymore.

It's a competition between branding and backlink profile. If the expired domain is an established brand with great backlink profile, it's the best option. If it has good backlink profile but not a brand, the site may stop growing if Google decides to pull the plug at some point. If it has average backlink profile and terrible for branding, just avoid it. You should also skip it if the expired domain belongs to an unrelated niche.

If I can find a clean, topical expired domain with real backlinks and no spam history, I’ll take that over fresh
it saves months of link building.

Starting on a fresh domain is crazy in my opinion. When the difference in price between an expired domain and fresh is the same why would you go fresh? When the price of an expiring domain is a negligible amount above a fresh domain, why would you go with the one that requires tons of effort to get to the same point that you start at with an expiring domain?

The value prospect is not really there unless you need a specific name (company name / brand name). If you are at all loose on the name itself then you should never go fresh domain.

I’d look at the history first not just the links. If the old site was in the same niche and the links are clean then an expired can be pretty useful. But if the history looks weird I’d just go fresh and avoid the headache.

Fresh unless the expired one has a really clean history and links that match the niche. I'd rather start from zero than inherit backlinks that look good in a tool but have no real value
