Are Instagram followers becoming less important?

Your existing followers are super important for engagement, community building and eventually those who will buy your products. Non-Followers are also important for views and engagement, but if they follow you that means they want to be in touch with you, and will be monetisable down the line.

The number of followers on Instagram is always the most important factor. Currently, Reel always recommends that more views contribute to increasing the number of followers.

Followers are the most important part; you should not ignore them. As Follower count helps you generate revenue with paid sponsorships, Instagram monetization, and lead generation, and sometimes helps businesses to get commission work.

Yes, I have noticed this with Reels as well. A post can reach many people who do not follow the account if the content gets good engagement. I think being followers is helpful for a consistent audience, but being able to reach non followers will make a big impact in terms of the overall growth

It used to be that the higher number of followers meant more influence but now the trend seems to be based on engagement even with fewer followers

Instagram increasingly rewards content based on signals such as watch time, shares, saves, comments, and how well content matches a viewer’s interests. That means a smaller account can still reach people beyond its follower base.

i feel that follower count is less important than it has been previously in terms of reach. the reel can be boosted towards individuals who do not even know about ur account. from my perspecttive the more important aspect would be to convert those views into followers or customers.

I think followers are still useful but Reels can reach a large audience beyond your existing followers through recommendations and Explore for growth I’d pay more attention to watch time shares saves and profile visits rather than treating follower count as the only important metric

Yes, absolutely. Instagram shifted from showing content only to followers to an interest-based algorithm. Reels are distributed primarily to non-followers based on watch time and shares, so a account with 100 followers can easily get millions of views. Followers now mainly serve as social proof and Story viewers.

Instagram still suggests reels to existing followers, and if your reels are reaching non followers, that means your videos are being tested for non followers interest.

For discovery, definitely less important. But for Stories and actually building a returning audience, followers still matter a lot.

I’ve noticed the same. It seems like content quality and engagement are becoming more important than follower count, especially with Reels reaching a lot of non-followers.

Yeah, IG now relies heavily on an interest graph. views and Watch tym are the currency. If u can hold their attention in your reels then the algorithm will distribute your reel beyond your followers’ circle.

Followers are kind of useless nowadays unless u are sending traffic to direct messages or broadcasting channels. If ur initial 3 second retention rate fails, then the feed wont even show that to your followers list.

it surely does. nowadays a reel might go viral with people who had never even seen ur profile in the first place. i would prefer to get 10k views from my target audience as opposed to 50k irrelevant views bcz those are the people who will engage or purchasse my product.
