Why Some Backlinks Stop Working After a Few Months

What I've been observing is that sometimes backlinks are very good when you create them, but then they become useless after a few months.Would like to know what you guys think about this. Do you check your older links to see if they have been indexed and if they are sending traffic or not
tbh i’d check the page is still live and indexed every few month , especially for the stronger links. no point wasting hours checking every backlink though, some will naturally drop off.

I always recheck older backlinks because a link that looks valuable today can lose its juice if the page gets deindexed, removed, or stops attracting traffic.

Anyone building and providing PBN backlinks or guest posts sees this happen constantly. A link typically loses power when the article rolls off the homepage and becomes buried deep within the site architecture. Once a post is orphaned, it forfeits nearly all of its authority.

I check if links remain live, indexed, followed, and still drive rankings or traffic.
Same here, I’m not just checking whether the link is alive. Indexed, follow or nofollow, relevancy, and real traffic will give you so much more information.

yeap, I regularly check the backlinks.. BTW, do you use any tools to help you keep track of your links?

Yes, every quarter, and it is the most useful hour of the month. Open the page the link sits on, check it is still indexed, check the site's newer posts are indexed too. Last time a third of my older placements had quietly dropped out of the index, not deleted, just no longer crawled because the host stopped linking to them internally. Those links were doing nothing. The fix was not new links, it was getting the old pages crawled again with a few support links pointed at them, and the rankings that had drifted came back inside a month. Most people buy replacement links for a problem a recrawl would have solved.

Yes, you can check older backlinks every few months to see whether the pages are still live, indexed, and passing links. Sometimes, a page gets buried in the site's archives or loses its internal links, which can reduce its value.
Also, updating the content on those pages, where possible, can also help keep them relevant and provide more value.
