Which is better: 1 powerful backlink or 10 average backlinks?

I wouldn’t evaluate it based on the number itself. 10 relevant yet good links can have more value than 1 good link when they are all coming from different good websites.

It is better to look at relevance, traffic, placement, and other backlinks than only at DR.

Strong link will have greater impact for organic if placed closer to homepage.

However for AI citations, content around them will make the biggest difference.
10 websites praising your brand (even if not linked) is better than one.
 
One strong backlink from a high authority website and with topical relevance will always outperform multiple average backlinks.

You didn't define what powerful means and what average means.

In simple terms, it is always better to go for relevant links. But like you've most likely seen, a really powerful link can do wonders. Powerful is not just DA/DR. A site with high DA/DR without accompanying search traffic is not powerful in my book, unless it's purpose built PBN.
 
The page matters as much as the domain. A link from a strong site can still be weak if the page itself has no traffic, no internal links and is buried deep in the site.

That’s precisely why labeling a backlink as “powerful” becomes meaningless without clearly defining what a powerful backlink actually is.

Just like DA/DR on its own has almost no value whatsoever, so does a large amount of traffic irrelevant to the niche or keywords. A true power backlink is relevant, has real visibility, carries weight and has excellent context placement.
 
I would look at relevance and placement first since one strong relevant link can be more useful than several unrelated links

This is true but unfortunately, a lot of sites are being promoted with high traffic, meanwhile said traffic is absolute garbage.
 
Agreed, relevance and link quality matter more than just the number. I’d take several relevant links from solid sites over one high-dr link with little relevance.
 
It depends on relevance and quality more than the count. One strong, relevant placement can help, but several solid links from distinct relevant sites may build a more balanced profile over time.

1 backlink more poweful, also relevant your niche most important..

I would not use traffic volume as an indicator of quality.

What really matters is how that traffic was generated, by which keywords, if the traffic is relevant to the niche, and if it converts.

It is much more profitable to have 10K targeted organic visits than 100K irrelevant visits.
 
Exactly. I’d take relevance and placement over raw backlink count or DR. One genuinely relevant link can be more valuable than 10 random average links.
 
I agree that relevance matters more than simply counting backlinks. One authoritative, highly relevant link can be valuable, but several quality links from different sites can diversify your profile.
