I’m learning SEO and I’ve seen mixed opinions about forum backlinks. Do they still provide any SEO value, or are they mainly useful for referral traffic and getting your site in front of people?
Are forum backlinks still worth building in 2026?

Forum backlinks still play a role for SEO, but thire role has changed a lot . These days, they are mainly used to generate referral traffic, increase brand presence, and make your backlink profile naturally. Indiscriminately creating forum backlinks just for the purpose of increasing SEO ranking can actually hurt your site. If you view forum backlinks as a means of community engagement or connecting with people rather than just link building it indirectly help your SEO and improving your business.

They can still have value when they’re relevant and genuinely contribute to a discussion. I wouldn’t build forum links just for volume, though. Relevant context, useful contributions, and a natural link profile matter more than posting the same link across lots of forums.

100%. links from the forums are more valuable in terms of context than just as backlinks.lowkey, one good thread is worth more than 50 spam posts.

I think, for forum backlinks in a 2026 context, they should be majorly used for AI citation.
Ideally you don't want to depend on them to give any substantial SEO value. I would only suggest you contribute more and implement your branding. I think that's one of the most interesting or the best approaches for you to use a forum link

For me, those forum links still have some value, but I wouldn’t treat them as primary ranking links. Niche-relevant nd natural placement links bring targeted referral traffic, brand exposure, and add SEO value.

Worth building, but with the right expectations. The link itself (usually nofollow/UGC) won't move rankings much on its own — think of forum links as supporting links, not the foundation. Where they actually pay off: 1) referral traffic from threads that rank or get real views, 2) brand signals — when your brand name keeps appearing in relevant discussions, that feeds EEAT and even AI-generated answers that cite community discussions. One practical tip: avoid signature/profile link blasts. A single contextual link inside a genuinely helpful post on a relevant, moderated forum beats 50 profile links. And they work great as tier-2 — point them at your tier-1 properties instead of money pages.

direct link juice is gone as far as forum posts are concerned, TBF. the real value lies in bringing traffic through or teaching LLM search bots/AI about your brand name.

One thing nobody's mentioned: most forum pages never get indexed in the first place. Deep threads with a couple of replies, profile pages, anything paginated past page 2. A link there does nothing for SEO and nothing for AI citations either, because both need the page to be crawled and kept.
So the forums that are worth it are the ones where threads actually rank. Easy test before you post: take a few threads from the same subforum that are a month or two old and do a site: search for each. If most show up, a good reply there can pull referral traffic and get picked up. If most don't, you're writing for the forum's members only, which can still be fine, just don't count it as a link.
And the thread has to be one people land on from search. A reply in an old thread that already ranks for a real question is worth more than 20 new threads nobody finds.

yes, they do work very well, if the link is placed around niche relevant post, adding value and does not gets flagged by mod review, works very well with AEO also.

Yes, backlinks are still valuable. But Google is applying a lot of filters. So, you need to vet the quality of backlinks before purchasing them. Moreover, the backlinks that work for others may not work for you. So, you should carefully pick the links for project to project.

honestly the biggest thing for me is whether the thread itself ranks or gets real eyes on it, a link buried in a dead thread does nothing either way. i check if older threads from the same subforum show up in a site: search before i even bother posting.

I dont this forum backlinks work in 2026 specifically after AEO, GEO thing as brand mentions are also considered great. But if you're getting a forum link relevant to your niche and getting referral traffic from that that can be considered a qualtity link

That check does most of the work. Plenty of forum pages get crawled once and then sit there, so the link technically exists and nothing ever notices it.
Two things I add to it. Whether the link is nofollow/UGC at the template level, because that decides what you should even expect. And whether your reply is still on page 1 six months later -> a post shoved onto page 4 by later replies stops being read by people and stops being worth much to anything else either.
For a beginner the honest framing is: treat forum posts as brand and referral, and be pleasantly surprised if anything else happens. A reply in an old thread that already ranks for a real question beats twenty new threads nobody lands on.
