I would spend the $1 million on a mixture of the S&P 500 index, U.S Treasury Bonds, and Property. All hold their value very well (in the case of the S&P 500 it has increased steadily in value over the past 30 years).
This would ensure I have spent the $1 million, while keeping it at the same time.
