Does every article need to be very detailed?

It really depends on the topic. Some subjects need detail, while others can be explained properly in a few paragraphs.

The content can be short provided it answers the topic completely. But it is more important to make an article relevant than to extend it. For many topics 500-800 words of focused, useful and relevant content can be a good fit. It does not need to be filled with extra information to make the word count bigger.
 
Not every article needs to be long or highly detailed. Usually focus on answering the search intent clearly first. If a topic needs only 700 words, adding 2,000 words can make the content boring and less useful.
 
It is not really about the length of the post. It is more about the relevance of the topic. if the topic is broad, it will for sure require a broad coverage and vice versa. It also boils down to niche relevancy. Umm... like if we talk about educational posts, they require more coverage. The same goes for finance, law, gaming or so. Whereas if we compare talk about lifestyle, they can be short. Then another thing to consider is intent. Long posts generally work better, but if the content is all low-quality, then it will do more damage.

some questions were answered in 300 words, others require 2k plus . i observe what users really needs rather than some set number of words honestly

No, Every article not need detailing. The Article should be of high quality being detailed is not what matters.

if the answer is within 600 words, why bother making it 2k? i would prefer answering the question and then proceeding to the next page.
 
Google AI generally answers quick questions. So I would stick with long, comprehensive articles.

word count is irrelevant to me if the visitor receives an answer quickly without going back to the search engine results pages then that page have done its job
 
No it does not.

When you check SERPs, you'll see sometimes just one or two sentence answers ranking high.
 
On the "stick with long articles because AI answers the quick questions" point, I'd push back a little. The times I padded a page out to cover everything, the thing that actually moved was splitting it instead. Had a page trying to answer a "what is" question and a "how do I pick one" question in the same breath, and it did neither well. Two shorter pages, each on one question, and both started picking up impressions.

So my rough rule is one question per page, and the length is whatever that question needs. If I'm still typing after the question is answered, that's usually a second page I haven't written yet.

Are your short topics and your big ones sitting in the same category, or separate sections? Changes how I'd link them together.

You should keep it short for simple queries that can be answered quickly; unnecessarily padding a quick answer with fluff actually hurts your SEO.
 
I don’t really follow a fixed word count. I check the SERP and see what kind of information people expect for that query. Some topics are done in 500 words, while others need much more. I would rather keep it useful than add words just for SEO.

Nope it just makes them angry and lowers the bounce rate. If the short reply does the job it was okay to leave it short in my opinion.

Every article should be as detailed as necessary to satisfy the search intent—some queries genuinely require 2,000 words, while others can be answered properly in 500. So, focus on usefulness rather than the word count.
 
Not every topic needs 2000 words. If the question is properly answered in 500 words theres no point stretching it just to make the article longer

If you know that the article can be short as required but you are still dragging it out, you will lose traffic because they will eventually lose curiosity about your posts. Don't drag it out more than is needed.
 
it mostly depends on the topic.some subjects need more detail while others can covered properly with just a few paragraphs

word count always seems to get in the way, in my opinion u must discuss the topic in depth and include additional information when needed.
