Curious about Expired Domain process

Hi All!

Question regarding expired domain tactics, I see it being posted a lot here on BHW but always curious on how the process works and what it takes.

I know many replies will say oh this is dangerous, and that Google can catch this. I understand, I am just trying to learn this for a site that holds no value to me, just for the test.

So far I understand the following:
1. You buy a similar domain in your niche either .ca or .com from expired domains...
2. You run the site for a few week to a month, you do some updates etc.
3. After that time frame you add your main target site to it?

Is there anything am I missing, should I be hosting these domains off another hosting site, for example if target domain is on godaddy, I would host this on spaceship, etc?

The biggest thing is checking the domains history before anything else. look at old pages, backlinks, anchors and whether the previous site was actually relevant to the niche. Hosting on a different provider is only one small part of it.

You have to check health and quality of a website first.

That is risky, because expired domain names are very easily reclaimed through appeals.

check first the history, backlinks, what kind of niche, is it "clean"...

Check the wayback machine + site: to be sure it was not already spammed by another guy like you

I am in the process of trying this out myself. In theory it should work.
1. You find a domain/website being sold (or expired) that is in your niche.
2. You check it on Semrush/Ahrefs/Moz and on the Wayback Machine.
3. If all looks good, you purchase it.
4. Set it up, maybe modernize it if it was an older site. And make sure that all the website's backlinks lead to a working page, not a 404.
5. Run it for a month or two.
6. Add a backlink to your main site, either on the homepage, in the footer, or both.

This should then act as a very HQ backlink to your main website. Do this for a handful of domains, and you're good.

You could run all your websites on the same server, but if you fear search engines might connect these together, you can make it look separate by running multiple Cloudflare Tunnels on the server from multiple Cloudflare accounts.
