ChatGPT Is Starting to Show Ads at the Bottom of Answers. Anyone Else Seeing This?

I've noticed something interesting recently. ChatGPT is now displaying ad listings at the bottom of some answers, somewhat similar to how Google displays sponsored results alongside organic search results.

This got me thinking about where AI search is heading. If ChatGPT continues expanding its advertising model, could we eventually see something similar to Google?

For SEO and AI SEO/GEO, this could become quite interesting.

Google built its search ecosystem around SEO + PPC. Now AI platforms are introducing sponsored advertising as well. If users increasingly shift from traditional search to AI, could we eventually see a similar model organic AI visibility + paid AI advertising?

Not yet on my end, but if true, that's going to change search behavior completely
 
i think this will end up creating 2 separate games just like search did

one is getting your brand mentioned naturally inside the AI answer, the other is paying for the sponsored placement below it

the interesting part is that ads dont control the actual answer, so GEO/AEO probably becomes more valuable not less
 
Their direct competitor is Google. They're heading on a collision course against Google, so their marketing models will match. AI will eventually replace search engines but the only thing stopping them is lack of web index. If everyone can scrape web and contain their own web index, Google can no longer have a monopoly.

Yeah, I noticed the same. I think testing it with Free users first is a smart way for them to see how people react to ads. Will be interesting to see if they eventually expand it to other plans.

Haha, could be. If they can keep the basic version free and make money from ads, that could actually work pretty well for them given how many people are using ChatGPT every day.

That's what I'm thinking too. If people start going to ChatGPT first instead of Google for certain searches, it could definitely change how websites approach traffic and visibility.

Yeah, I think this is probably where things are heading. Getting mentioned naturally in the AI answer and getting a sponsored placement are two different things.

It could become very similar to the SEO vs PPC model we already have with Google.

I agree that the web index is probably one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle. Google has had decades to build that infrastructure.
But if AI platforms keep improving their own web retrieval and indexing, I can definitely see them becoming a much bigger competitor to traditional search.

True. Once you have that kind of user base, advertising is an obvious monetization route.
 
Had any anyone tried thses ads, i think they will work great, it is highly targeted, i thunk thses ads can work great, maybe not for high ticket things but it still can work, but i wonder how much is the cost there?
 
They need to make money too, they are burning so much data. Traffic quality is going to be top notch.
 
As far as I know, this it one of new feature from Chat GPT, but the ads will not show-up for Plus/Pro/Business,etc..
Well, I think Chat GPT have invested a lot with tons of traffic user, it's time for them to harvest some...

I agree, the targeting could make these ads worth testing, especially for lower-priced offers. I’m curious what the minimum budget and cost per click will be.

Yeah, that makes sense. If ads are limited to free users, I wonder how much traffic advertisers can reach and what the pricing will look like.

Agreed, with that many users, it was probably inevitable. The interesting part will be whether the ads are relevant enough to perform well.

True, they need to find ways to monetize that audience. I’m curious whether the ad costs will be reasonable for smaller advertisers too.
 
They gotta stop burning cash at some point. So many are free users. They're also limiting to what free users can do on chatgpt.
 
This is an interesting shift for sure. If ads become a regular part of the free ChatGPT experience, the bigger question for SEOs will be how sponsored visibility and organic AI mentions develop side by side. That could create a whole new layer of optimization to watch.
