If I am not wrong, you want to rebuild the old site on that old domain and then get a backlink to your money site??

i tried this. rebuilding the old site first worked better then redirect for me.. put old content back from archive, add few new pages, leave it 1 or 2 months, then link to my site from it. when i did 301 straight away nothing moved and one domain lost all its rankings in a month

I've seen people use expired domains for SEO but i'd be careful with the history. i'd check relevance, old content and backlink quality before doing anything with one.
I have worked with expired domains before, old information can some times be helpfull but I do my research on backlinks and archive history first, then duplicate similar pages.

You must check the backlink profile, indexation and DA, PA and DR before buying the domain.

check the wayback history and backlinks before buying anything. that can save you from a lot of bad domains.

I'd spend more time checking the backlink profile than the domain age. A lot of old domains have messy link histories.

don't just look at DR or domain age i'd spend more time checking where the backlinks actually came from.
