There has been a lot of discussion about whether backlinks are becoming less important as search engines become better at understanding content, entities, context, and user intent.

sure, there is some effect from the amount of backlinks, but for me, it is way more important that they are relevant and what their source is. quality content nd quality links are perfect combination.

Short answer, it is very much still important. But like always, lead with content then links follow.

I still think backlinks matter, especially when they’re relevant and high quality. But content and user intent should come first.

Google is much better at understanding topics and search intent now , but links still matter a lot. For low competition or long tail queries, good content can be enough. With competitive commercial terms, most sites already have good content, so links from trusted sources can make a big difference , it is less about getting tons of links now and more about having a solid site with some real authority behind it

yes. every "content is enough" site i looked at had links, they just didnt build them on purpose. take two pages same quality, the one with links wins, been that way 15 years

Links won't die. Users will continue to jump from one page to another, and bots/AI agents will travel from one page to another as long as the web and search exist. A link is essentially a path between two web resources. Even without Google, other search engines, crawlers, and AI agents still need ways to discover and navigate to pages. If there is no direct link, the page may be much harder to discover unless it is found through other mechanisms such as sitemaps, feeds, APIs, or direct URLs.

Yes, it's still working fine. High quality relevant links can help search engines understand the topic and authority of a site, especially when they come from real websites with useful content.
