Tried opening the pdf as well, but it looks like the file is no longer available. Would have been interesting to analyze the page while it was live.

Yeah, that’s an interesting case.

It could be getting a boost from the domain’s existing authority, relevance, internal signals or query specific factors rather than backlinks alone.

AI generated content can rank but simply copying the format on another site doesn’t guarantee the same result.

i dont think the PDF format or AI content is the main reason here

google can rank PDFs normally. id first look at how that exact file was discovered or linked on the domain and how strong the SERP actually is

not seeing backlinks in ahrefs doesnt always mean google sees zero signals

that's right. pdf or html file on existing authortiy domain will rank higher for few days.

Yes, I suppose that PDF parasites could also be effective when doing churn and burn projects; however, my expectations would remain realistic.

It would also be interesting to analyze the old indexes, as sometime such strange win are just a part of the history of the domain itself.

It ultimately comes down to the raw authority of the root domain. Moody.edu, for instance, is a highly trusted educational institution with substantial historical backlinks and considerable trust established with Google.
