Barbers in India are training their AI models for AI companies

Many AI companies are now collecting real-world training data from barbers in India. Barbers wear cameras while working so the models can learn their hand movements and how they perform a haircut. Some workers doing this type of data collection are reportedly being paid around $1/hour.

Interesting to see AI training moving from online data to actual physical work.

Ain't no way i would let a clanker with a pair of scissors and a shaver on my head. I'm never getting my hair cut again, if its just clanker barbers! lol

yea not sure if i would ever trust a robot haircut, but who knows in 10-20 years.
 
Well... people from a couple generations ago were scared of elevators and now people get into self driving taxis. Never underestimate how adaptable the human race can be.
 
You don't say.... imagining how a pay of robotic hands with clippers hovering around my ears. Doesn't feel comfortable. A lot of things could go wrong. I won't trust them at least not yet
 
This isn't happening only in India; similar real-world data collection is happening in other countries too. I think India got more attention simply because so many workers started posting videos of the camera setups on social media, which then got picked up by the media.
 
It’s interesting to see AI training moving into real-world tasks like this. The bigger questions for me are worker pay, consent, and customer privacy when cameras are involved. AI may benefit from this kind of data, but the people collecting it should be treated fairly too.
