is the 10 minute rule still a thing on youtube

YouTube lowered the mid-roll ad threshold from 10 minutes to 8 minutes a while ago. So you now only need videos to be 8+ minutes long to place mid-roll ads. Shorts are great for audience growth, but long-form (8+ mins) still generates significantly better ad revenue.

Short videos are currently popular on Youtube, you might want to consider them.

I think you should try looking into the short video trend, if you find it interesting, give it a try.

It's been a while since I've done any stuff on Youtube. Back in the old days you would need to get a video over 10 minutes for it to be really worth your time in terms of revenue, is this still the case or should i focus more on short form content?
Short reels perform better. Long form content doesn't have to be 10 minutes long, as long as the topic is explained thoroughly.

I think retention matters more now than hitting 10 minutes. Longer videos can still earn more, but I wouldn’t stretch a video just to reach 10 minutes.

To be honest i focus on both because long-form is still better for deeper engagement and revenue while shorts can help bring in new viewers also test both and see what works for your niche.

The time threshold rule has changed from 10 minutes to 8 minutes, but viewers might not like having too many ads in such a short video.

For revenue, long form still completely beats short form. The 10 minute mark became 8 minutes for mid-roll ads. Shorts RPM is tiny compared to long videos, so if money is your primary goal, stick to 8+ minute long form

It would be better to take away the clocks from the video entirely. If people drop off at the 8 minute mark because you have added 2 minutes on, then your 10 minute video have not really helped you out much at all.

I could take "No" as an answer. From my point of view who in charge of operate agencies. Almost my customer (~5 agency) transfer to short-form (3-7 mins is preferly).
You should only consider 10 mins based on the amount of knowledge/content which you would like spread to viewer/listener,
And yes, just take this comment as an advice. It's all in your hand to make the decision,
Good luck.

the old 10 minute rule not thing anymore make a good 6 minute video longer just for ads because lower retention can hurt more than the extra ad opportunity helps

There is no need for you to make those long videos if not required for the topic. If you still would like to try, 6 - 8 minute videos would be best to try for better earnings.

It still is the case, when you create videos over 8 mins, you unlock the mid roll ads feature...so basically YouTube gets to place more ads which results in more earnings. However keep in mind when you increase the length of the videos, also make sure your videos are quite engaging , atleast to hit retention rates of 60-70% minimum, or else your videos and channels will just get tanked due to low retention rates.

Retention is the most important part you should focus on.

I notice that the 10 minute rule is no longer applicable and has been replaced by an 8 minute threshold. If your goal is to make money, you shouldn't switch entirely to Shorts (even though they are easy to create). I view Shorts as a way to gain reach and test topics, I then develop the ones that perform well into long form videos.

Now that 8 minute long videos are eligible for mid-roll ads on YouTube; but if the video is really good at the 6 minute mark, don't force yourself to pad it out, because hurting viewer retention will cost you far more than the little extra ad revenue you might make.

I think the length of a video doesn't determine its effectiveness much; what matters is how you use the video to keep viewers engaged and attract a large audience. That's what will decide your success.

I myself had never heard of this rule, so I think it's just what people say but they have no idea how the systel actually works. You can be profitable with a 3 minute long video and you can be unprofitable with a 20 minute long video
