What is the difference between an algorithmic penalty and a manual action in SEO? How can you identify whether a website’s ranking drop is caused by an algorithm update or a manual action, and what steps should you take to recover?

A manual action will show up in your GSC account. Depending on what the manual action was for, there will be different ways to remedy it, however you will have to have discourse with Google to have any chance of getting rid of it.

imo, algo penality happens when google sys reassess site and ranking drops usually happen on update. manual actions when google team take action agnst site violation. check with gsc manual action if nthng there compare drop with known updates, analyse traffic, pages and comptitors. to avoid these fix with actual issues , improve qualty content, cleanup unnatural links and monitor performance. so dn't blindly disavow evrythng.

Manually penalties are usually more severe.

But ironically also easier to get rid of than algo ones.

Basically, a manual action is when Google flags your site directly, while an algorithm drop usually happens after an update.

Check Google Search Console for manuala ction notices, then compare the drop with known Google updates and fix the weak areas before requesting reconsideration if needed.

Manual action could damage your site's ability to rank
Algo updates are routine and affects everyone.

quick check, manual action shows in search console under security and manual actions, if that page is empty its algorithmic. had one drop last year, panicked, gsc was clean, it was just the core update and it came back in 6 weeks without me touching anything

An algorithmic penalty is not targeted for you but you're in the blast radius. For example, if Google targets all websites that spam reddit to get traffic, your site may be affected for doing it. These are severe and usually attack hundreds or thousands of sites based on some patterns.

A manual penalty is targeted for your site. For example, if you purchase backlinks from a low-quality seller and the entire network is exposed later, you'll get a penalty for doing black hat. The penalty will show up in your GSC and they mention the type of penalty without revealing exact details. They just say link farms, link exchange, etc. and it's up to you to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it.
