Rankings might fall despite everything being alright with regard to all the common SEO audit steps. Have you ever come across a case where this was due to something unexpected, say something in your website itself, etc,

A ranking drop is not always caused by an SEO mistake. Sometimes a site redesign, content removal, or URL change can affect how Google understands the pages, even when the main SEO settings have not changed.

I have found that rankings often drop due to technical things on the site such as indexing, canonical, and internal-linking issues and not the usual suspects of SEO.

Yes, I've seen rankings drop due to unexpected website issues (like accidental noindex tags, server errors, slow hosting, or recent code/deployment changes) rather than traditional SEO issues.

Yes. I’ve seen cases where the usual technical SEO checks looked fine, but rankings still dropped because of less obvious issues like UI ? UX changes, content updating, search intent changes, content overlap/cannibalization, internal linking changes, indexing inconsistencies, or competitors improving their content.

yesh i have experienced this before. there have been cases where the reason for the decrease in rankings was something technical such as a website redessign, internal link problems, poor performance or even mistakes with noindex or canonical settings. everything else is fine with SEO.

yeah, once traced a drop back to slow server response times after a hosting migration, nothing on-page or content wise changed but page speed tanked and rankings followed within weeks. wasn't even on my radar until i checked core web vitals

sometimes, the reasons could be quite straightforward too. for example i would look into redirects, changes in indexing, expired domains, issues with hosting or maybe a new theme or plugin update. it does not necessarily mean that google made any changes, it might just be that the webssite did.

You start blaming your SEO, then realize the issue was something totally random like a site update, slow pages, or downtime. SEO can be a real detective game sometimes!
 
Yes sometimes it’s not an obvious SEO issue I’d also check things like recent site changes internal linking and whether important pages accidentally became harder to crawl

I’ve seen this happen after changes that didn’t look like an SEO problem at first Things like a theme update, page speed issue or internal links changing can sometimes have a bigger effect than expected
 
Everyones answering with site stuff, mine was off site entirely, client swore his rankings had tanked but the rankings were fine, his number had changed on half a dozen directories months earlier and the calls were just going somewhere else.
