EMD Domains are still in the game, but I feel that there will be an upcoming update for that as well. I have seen emds ranking with a single page & not without much offpage or building backlinks. But EMD domains are always at the edge of a penalty as there not much room while selecting anchors for an emd domain.

the reason y i like this approach is that the page will remain concenttrated on one subject only. in some cases a smaller website with a precise goal could win against bigger webssites just bcuz it would match the search intention more accurately. the difficult part is to find these hidden keywords.

yep.. i got hit with few kwds #1, and used simple statics that suited me as targets with exact match of queries abd build focus single page site around them. thus small gap between query intent and page relevance, easier to push page up without need of huge amt of authority
