when rankings improve but conversation don't what do you usually investigate first ?

I would look at search intent and traffic quality first, better rankings can still bring less relevant visitors.
Then I'd audit the landing page and conversion funnel and see where the drop-off is.

The reason because the site is ranking for keywords that look relevant but have the wrong search intent.

For example, ranking higher for “best CRM software” can generate research traffic, while “buy CRM software for small business” is much closer to conversion.

So I wouldn’t immediately blame the backlinks or rankings. I will first check which keywords produced the ranking growth and whether those keywords realistically lead to the desired conversion.

Improved ranking means your site has a good face value - it's attracting the right traffic. Failure to generate leads or have conversion, you check your landing page. There is a varians in your pages face value and content. Optimize your landing page and conversion funnel.

Check if the keywords bringing traffic actually match what you are offering. More traffic is not always better traffic.

Look at the keywords behind the traffic increase, not just the ranking positions. The new keywords may have higher visibility but weaker buying or conversion intent.

check search intent first, then look at the page’s title, offer, and call to action to see if they match what visitors expected

I’d check whether the extra rankings are bringing the right audience first. Then I’d compare search intent CTR landing page relevance and the steps between arriving on the page and taking action.

First check whether the traffic is actually relevant to the business, because higher rankings don’t always mean higher quality visitors

I'd check traffic quality first. Better rankings don't always mean better visitors. Then I'd look at keyword intent and the landing page experience. I've seen plenty of cases where rankings improved but the traffic had almost zero buying intent.

i would first analyze the old versus the new traffic. if there have been improvements in ranking in terms of broad, non commercial keywords, it is possible that the number of visitors has increased but not the number of buyers. i would then take a look at the landing page, offer nd conversion funnel to find out where the traffic is leakking.

Conversions Versions down and Traffic increase in my niche IS when the search intent Keywords Pages drop and the Home Page ranks. You need to know your niche INSIDE Out.
