You can rank #1 for a commercial keyword, have solid backlinks, and still get completely ignored when the same buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for recommendations.

So the real question becomes:
Are we still measuring visibility the right way?

Traditional SEO asks: “Where do I rank?”
AI search asks: “Does the model know me, mention me, cite me, or actually recommend me?”

Those are not the same thing.

Curious what people here are actually tracking right now:
  1. Google rankings
  2. Recommendation / share of voice
  3. Actual leads or conversions coming from AI
Personally I think #3 is going to matter a lot more than just counting how often your brand gets named.

What are you measuring for clients in 2026?

Yes, currently the SEO industry is going through the phase where daily some or the other new things are getting into the online marketing industry. Traditional and AI SEO have their own factors to get ranked in SERP.

There are instances where LLMs display your brand name in the answer but give a hyperlink (citation) of your competitor. In today's marketing world a strong entity optimization is necessary. Off page activities with backlinks generation like outreach, guest postings, digital PR, mentions from social media will help support citation built up in the search engines.

I’d keep #3 as the main business KPI, but still track #2 as the diagnostic metric. Build a fixed set of buyer-intent prompts for the client and rerun the same set regularly, recording whether the brand gets mentioned, cited or recommended versus competitors

Then match that with referral traffic and conversions where the AI platform passes a usable referrer. That gives you two useful layers: whether visibility is moving, and whether any of that visibility is actually turning into business. A random screenshot where ChatGPT recommended the brand once doesn’t tell you much over time
