Hi guys,
Google is ranking the wrong page for one of my target keywords.
I already have a page focused on that keyword, but another related page keeps showing in the results instead.
What would you do to make Google rank the right page?

First, check whether both pages are targeting the same search intent.
Strengthen the page you want with better content, internal links, and relevance. If the other page isn’t needed, consider merging it or adding a redirect.Check canonical/indexing issues in Search Console, request reindexing, and give Google time to reassess.

It will be worth verifying if the two pages have the same intent and if they have similar content it is also worth improving the targeted page through more internal linking and relevant topics for it to rank.

The best option is to have one unique page for the keyphrase which you want to rank for. Always create a unique page if the keyword difficulty and competition is high. If you feel manually you are unable to optimize such pages then simply use paid tools to get the pages optimized.

Check why the other page better matches the query before making changes. The content, intent, and overall relevance may be stronger, which could explain why Google keeps ranking it.

I’d check GSC first before assuming it’s definitely cannibalization. Filter the exact query in the Performance report, then open the Pages tab and see if both URLs are actually getting impressions for that same query

If they’re competing for the same intent, then consolidating the overlap or redirecting the weaker page can make sense. If the intent is different, I’d make that difference much clearer in the title, H1, content and internal anchors

I wouldn’t canonical the “wrong” page unless the two pages are basically duplicate or very similar content

First thing to check is whether both pages are targeting the same search intent. If they are, strengthen internal links toward the page you want ranking, especially with relevant anchor text, and make that page the clearer topical match.

I’d also reduce competing signals on the wrong page where appropriate. Then give Google some time to recrawl and see whether the preferred URL starts gaining impressions.

I’d first check whether Google sees the two pages as competing for the same intent. Then I’d:

Strengthen the target page’s topical relevance for the keyword.
Add internal links using natural, descriptive anchors pointing to the target page.
Reduce overlap between the two pages.
Check canonical/indexing signals.
If the other page has little unique value, consider consolidating/redirecting it.

Google can choose a different canonical page when it considers another URL more useful or representative, s

usually happens when both pages have similar internal anchor text pointing at them. i'd add stronger internal links to the target page using the exact keyword, and change the other page's anchors to something slightly different so google doesn't get confused on which one to prioritize

From my point of view it was vry best to improves the relevancies of the targeted page to the searches as well as its internal linking, while minimising the overlapping content of the competing page. google always selects the more relevant pages.

I’d check for keyword cannibalization first. Strengthen the target page’s topical relevance, add internal links using natural contextual anchors, and reduce competing signals from the other page.
Also check canonicals and whether the two pages satisfy different search intents.

check if both pages are going after the same search intent.if they are then i would strengthen the internal links to the page i want to rank and use relevant anchor text so it the clearer match for the topic

I begin with linking internally first before checking what page does well via this search query becuz, at times, google simply understand intent better in another page.

Yeah, I would also look at intent right away. If they do coincide, using internal linking and better focusing on topics should resolve the cannibalization quite fast.

make the target page with clear content, internal links, and a clear title around the keyword.

I’d check for keyword cannibalization first. Tighten the target page’s title, headings, internal links, and content focus, then reduce overlap on the competing page.

Find the web pages in Google Search Console and check which keywords each of them ranks for. This will help you understand what the issue is - and yes, you might need to create a single, more relevant page.
