Why platforms can't just ban mobile IPs

People say mobile proxies are the most trusted and leave it there. The interesting part is why, and it's not magic - it's CGNAT.

Carriers don't hand every phone its own public address. Thousands of real subscribers sit behind one IP at the same time. So when a platform considers blocking that address, it's not blocking you, it's blocking a few thousand people who are just scrolling on their commute. That's a cost they mostly won't pay, and that's the whole reason mobile IPs get treated so gently.

Which is also why "clean vs dirty" works differently here. On a datacenter range you stand alone and everything you do is attributed to you. On a carrier IP you're buried in the noise of real traffic, and that noise is the actual product you're paying for.

The flip side is honest enough: it's slower, it costs more, and you're sharing that address with strangers, so occasionally somebody else's behaviour bleeds onto you.

Worth it for registrations, strict platforms and accounts you can't afford to lose.

ISP proxies are the rotation killer. Case from one of our clients.

Client came in with aged accounts running on residential with sticky sessions. IPs clean, pool fine. And still, every few days another profile got pushed into verification, then SMS confirmation.

His theory was a dirty pool. It wasn't that at all.

The sticky session expires, and the next login comes from a different IP. The platform sees the account suddenly arriving from somewhere new, anti-bot gets suspicious and asks the account to prove itself. Nothing to do with IP quality - the address just kept changing under a profile that was supposed to sit still.
He came to us to test ISP. Moved the profiles onto static ISP addresses, one per profile, and the verifications stopped immediately. He ended up taking 200.

Rotation still has its place - scraping, and anything that isn't sensitive about who is logging in. Accounts aren't that.

Proxies for AI agents and WebMCP

WebMCP has been all over the timeline this week. The idea: instead of your agent clicking through a page built for humans and re-reading the whole DOM every pass, the site exposes structured actions the agent just calls. Cleaner for the site, far cheaper in tokens for you.

The door gets opened by sites that want agent traffic - shops that want to be bought from, services that want bookings. Sites whose data is the business won't open anything. Nobody hands competitors their prices and stock in clean JSON.

So the web splits in two. Where there's a front door, your agent walks in. What a site already knows about you before your JavaScript runs

We built a checker to see what a connection actually gives away at each layer, then ran a batch of probes through it with the same Windows Chrome User-Agent on every request.

The order is what matters. The first TCP packet already carries the OS kernel's fingerprint: initial TTL, segment size, window, the order the kernel lays out its options. Then the TLS hello identifies the library that built it. Then the HTTP request gives up header order, case and HTTP/2 settings. Only after all of that does a single line of your JavaScript run. Three layers are already recorded before the page can spoof anything.

Now the part that matters if you use proxies: TCP terminates at the exit node. Those three layers describe the exit, not your machine. Your antidetect browser only reaches the fourth one - timezone, canvas, WebGL, fonts. What the kernel on the other end sends is out of its reach entirely.

That's also what separates the pool types, and the User-Agent has nothing to do with it. A datacenter exit answers from the same address every time, hands over device uptime on every request, and sits on a sterile 1500 MTU. A residential exit gives a different address each time, no uptime at all, and channel sizes that are all over the place because they're real last-mile connections - DSL, tunnels, mobile.

Uptime is the quiet one. A machine that hasn't rebooted in over a month isn't anybody's home device. Home devices sleep and reboot, servers don't.

Takeaway is simple. Your browser config covers the one layer you can see. The exit node decides the three you can't.

How to tell whether you're blocked by IP or by fingerprint

Repeat the same request from a new address with the same browser. Goes through - it was the IP. Doesn't - it's you.
Reverse test: same address, clean profile. If it lets you in now, the address is fine and the profile is what got flagged.
Until you've run both, switching pools is pointless. Half the "dirty proxies" complaints are the second case.

Is your provider double-counting your GB? Check it in five minutes

Seen a few threads lately where people caught providers burning 2x the traffic they actually used. You don't have to guess - the test is one command.
Download a file of known size through the proxy and compare what your machine counted with what the dashboard charged:

That's 100 MB on the wire. Now look at your dashboard.

What the numbers mean:
+2–7% over 100 MB - normal. TLS handshakes, headers, the odd retry. Every provider has this.
+30–50% - the provider counts both directions and didn't tell you. Not fraud, but your effective $/GB just went up by half. Check the ToS.
~2x - you're paying twice per byte. Move.
Two things that quietly inflate burn even on honest meters: failed requests (a 403 with a body still costs traffic - this is why success rate IS price) and image/video autoload in browser-based setups when you only needed the HTML.

100k marketplace pages = 6 GB or 250 GB. Same scrape, same proxies.

Billed traffic is bytes on the wire. A gzipped product-page HTML is 40-100 KB; the same page fully loaded is 1.5-3 MB. Across 100k pages that's ~5-10 GB versus 150-300 GB - a 25-30x difference on the same job.

How to stay on the small side:
- Most marketplaces feed their frontend from JSON endpoints (search, listing, offers). Pull those directly: 5-20 KB per item and no HTML parsing. DevTools -> Network -> filter XHR, copy as curl.
- Plain HTML targets: Scrapy/requests - assets never load at all.
- Anti-bot targets (Akamai/DataDome): hybrid. A real browser session collects the cookies, then the mass fetch runs over plain HTTP with those cookies through the same exit geo. Full-browser scraping is the last resort - and if you're forced into it, abort image/media/font requests via interception: the page still renders, the bill doesn't grow.

Running your farm on a shelf of Pixels? The honest math against renting.

The self-hosted build everyone describes in farm chats: used Pixel 4a at $60-100, SIM with unlimited data at $15-30/mo, USB power, one carrier IP you fully control. The line items nobody writes down: battery swells from 24/7 charging (a device dies roughly yearly), SIM re-registration after bans, and 1-2 hours/mo of your hands per device for flashing, rotation and airplane-mode scripts. Amortized honestly: $40-60 per month per always-on mobile IP.

The rented side, priced off this very board: dedicated mobile runs $45-85/mo, shared mobile traffic $4/GB at the smallest package down to $2.5-3/GB on volume tiers. An active TikTok/IG farm account burns 1-3 GB/mo. At 5 accounts per IP that's 5-15 GB - a 15 GB package at ~$3.3/GB, $17-50/mo. At 15 accounts (a realistic load per device with airplane-mode rotation) it's 15-45 GB - $50-115/mo on packages, at which point flat-rate dedicated at $45-85 is already the cheaper rental.

So the account count picks the rental type, and the rental type sets the bar for the shelf: up to ~8 accounts per IP, GB packages undercut everything. Above that, dedicated ($45-85) and your own Pixel ($40-60 + your weekends) land in the same money - and the decision stops being about price. Self-hosted wins only what money doesn't buy: full control of the IP's history and no pool neighbors. If that's not your constraint, you're maintaining hardware for a draw. Plug in your own account count - the crossover isn't ideology.

For the rented column: mobile $2.5-4/GB depending on package size (190 geos), ISP static from $3/IP.

40 AI workers can turn one outage into 1,080 API attempts instead of 120. Check whether your retries multiply: a LangGraph node with 3 attempts × a Tenacity wrapper with 3 attempts × an SDK with 2 retries (= 3 attempts) permits 27 outbound calls per failed job. That's a worst-case configuration calculation, not a benchmark.

For a LangGraph + OpenAI Python stack, give exactly one layer the retry budget:
- SDK: OpenAI(max_retries=0).
- Graph node: RetryPolicy(max_attempts=1); don't restart the entire graph on failure.
- Tenacity around the API call only: stop_after_attempt(3), wait_random_exponential(multiplier=1, max=20). Honor Retry-After when supplied.
- Retry transient rate-limit/server failures, not 400/401/403. Keep tool execution outside this wrapper: replaying model inference must not replay a payment, upload or message.

Verify against a local endpoint that always returns 429: count requests with all three layers enabled, then with one retry owner. The configured ceiling falls from 27 to 3 per job, or 1,080 to 120 for 40 jobs, provided no outer queue or gateway retries them again. A timeout after a write is a separate problem: reconcile the operation or use an endpoint-supported idempotency key; changing IP cannot tell you whether the write succeeded.

Residential IPs plus a CAPTCHA solver still won't scrape Google SERP. Here's what actually scores you.

Pieter Levels spent weeks building his own SERP API for Hotelist - residential exits, CAPTCHA solving, the full kit - and still couldn't keep it alive. That surprises people who treat SERP like any other target: buy cleaner IPs, solve the challenge, done. Google isn't scored that way, and knowing where the line actually sits saves you a month of rebuilding.

The sorry page is a receipt, not the block. By the time it appears, the session was already scored - solving the challenge hands you back a flagged session, which is why solver-based pipelines run for an hour and then die. Three signals do most of the scoring, and IP reputation is the weakest of them:

Your TLS and HTTP/2 stack. SETTINGS frame order, header order, ALPN - the client library is identified before a single byte of the page is rendered. A Python client with a Chrome user agent is a contradiction, and it's checked first.
Per-query shaping. Google limits the query, not just the address. A hundred clean IPs hammering the same fifty keywords look like one scraper with a hundred exits.
Request shape. Direct hits to /search with num=100&filter=0, no consent cookie, no NID, no referer - that combination doesn't occur in a human session.
Where residential genuinely pays: escaping ASN-level pre-flagging (datacenter ranges start the game behind), geo-true results for local packs and ads, and spreading the query-by-IP matrix so no exit carries a suspicious query pattern. What it cannot do is fix a client that announces itself at the TLS layer, or a query plan that repeats.

So the fix order is the reverse of what most people buy: client stack first (real browser or a TLS-matching HTTP client), query plan second (rotate queries, not just IPs; keep requests per exit per hour low; vary params), proxies third. SERP HTML runs 100-300 KB per page, so 50k queries is roughly 5-15 GB - on volume packages at $0.75-2/GB that's the cheapest line in the build, and the one people fix first for no reason.
