A fall in authority metrics alone is not necessarily cause for losing rank positions. A page with well developed topic coverage, accurate fulfillment of searcher's intent, and a history of gaining trust may still rely on those factors for its high ranking even if there is a reduction in link-related authority. Basically, while having authority is definitely an advantage, there are very few situations where being authoritative is the only reason that a page is kept visible.
It is better to pay attention to their relevance rather than quantity. The quality of a single link may outweigh the quality of dozens of others.Absolutely. The loss of one high-quality, relevant link may be more critical than the loss of 20 low,quality links. I would assess the quality of the link and the other authority factors of the page before determining that the rankings have been affected.
