I’ve seen this happen quite a few times on Reddit. You write a normal post or comment, there’s no obvious spam in it, and then suddenly it gets removed.
The annoying part is that sometimes Reddit doesn't really tell you what caused it.... so you end up guessing what went wrong.
Too much promotion
This is probably the obvious one, but it's easy to get wrong. A comment can be related to the topic and still come across as an ad. If the main point of the comment is basically "check out this brand", people are going to notice.
Adding links everywhere
I've seen people add a link to almost every comment they make. Even if the comments themselves are decent, that can make the account look promotional pretty quickly.. especially in communities where links aren't common.
Repeating the same comments
If you're leaving pretty much the same comment under different posts, that's another thing I'd be careful with. Changing a few words doesn't really change the fact that you're saying the same thing over and over.
Forcing the brand into the conversation
This is probably one of the bigger mistakes. You find a subreddit that's perfect for your niche and then try to mention the brand in every discussion. But not every post is actually a good fit. Sometimes the best thing is just to leave the brand out.
The subreddit doesn't allow it
Some communities are just strict about this stuff. They might allow discussion about a subject but still remove anything that looks like self-promotion or an outside link. So yeah, checking the rules before posting saves a lot of trouble.
The account itself
Account history can also play a part. If an account is fairly new and most of its activity suddenly starts looking promotional, that can obviously raise some flags. Doesn't mean every new account gets removed, but I'd definitely keep it in mind.
Filters doing their thing
Then there are the random ones... sometimes you can't really see what triggered it. Maybe it's the domain, a certain phrase, the link, or something else in the post. You just get the removal message and that's about it.
Editing a comment later
Something I've been seeing lately is people making a normal comment first and then editing it a few hours later to add a brand mention or link. The original comment might be completely fine, but the edit changes what the comment is doing. So I wouldn't assume that because the first version was okay, the edited version will be treated the same way.
Posting too much at once
I'd also watch the amount of activity. If an account suddenly starts posting and commenting a lot in a short period, the overall activity can look strange even if each individual comment seems harmless.
At the end of the day, I don't think every removal means "this was spam.." sometimes it's the subreddit rules, sometimes it's the link, sometimes it's the way the comment was written and sometimes you honestly have no idea.
What are some weird reasons you've seen a Reddit post or comment get removed?
