Who has published the most quantitative research on LLM rankings?

Hi, I used to dabble with SEO back in the early 2000s but haven't done much since. I'm assuming a lot still applies to chatgpt/claude/etc, but did find some research from last year indicating there was some heavier preference towards articles with citations, etc. It also seems like top google results (reddit and a lot of SEO spam) simply end up as the top results in LLM chats.

I have a ton of tabs open here to start researching, but was wondering if there are any more authoritative/sticky threads on this type with large articles I should be digging into first.

however, I would start from investigating citation behavior, searche nd entity/brand mentions across multiple language models. It is just thrilling when you can analyze the output of ChatGPT, Claude nd google AI side by side.

I think the fundamentals of good seo will continue to support llm's visibility because quality content, relevance, authority, and clear information still matter. on top of that, newer approaches like entity optimization, strong first party expertise, structured data, and being cited by trusted sources can help ai systems understand and reference your content. So I see llm seo more as an evolution of good seo.

For quantitative research, start with Princeton’s GEO paper (KDD 2024), then look at newer
he key point: Google rankings and LLM citations overlap, but they’re not the same thing.
 
I’d separate traditional Google rankings from LLM citation research. There are already studies measuring citation patterns across ChatGPT Claude, Perplexity and other systems, and some findings suggest Google rankings are useful but don’t fully explain AI visibility. Comparing the methodologies and datasets would probably be more useful than relying on a single study.
 
In particular, I would pay attention to crawlability, quality of first hand content, topic authority, citations/references, and visibility in search results
 
I'd start with studies from major SEO platforms and independent researchers, especially those tracking LLM citations.
 
From my experience AI seo is completely different from normal seo. You can basically have completely no seo, no backlinks and no credibility, but still be ranked #1 if you know what to do. A huge protip is to analyse how big fishes in GEO platforms do it, just ask chatgpt what is the best agency and then reverse engineer their means. Good luck tho, and a protip: AI seo techniques can harm your other rankings, so decide on which you want to focus. Especially since it's still a dabbling field.
