If you're a website owner, you can help your audience find your publication as a preferred source in Google Search. When a user selects your site as a preferred source, your content is more likely to appear in "Top Stories", highlighted with a "preferred" badge. In AI Mode and AI Overviews, your content can be highlighted with a "preferred" badge for users who have selected your site as a preferred source.

Yeah, this is worth paying attention to. If users can mark sites as preferred, brand loyalty and repeat visitors could become a stronger SEO signal than before.

Interesting update. The bigger point for me is the distinction between being cited by ai and being surfaced as a preferred source.

A preferred source signal could improve visibility for selected users, but I would not treat it as a direct path to more ai citations. The interesting part will be seeing whether sites that build strong reader preference also gain broader visibility across ai Search over time.

and I would never try to cheat user to do it. It is better to earn enough trust so that people use your site on their own it can work even better.

This looks useful for publishers, especially with AI Overviews becoming more prominent. I’d definitely test it on a site with established content and see whether being selected as a preferred source leads to more visibility.

I do think this would only influence search result for your specific Google account/profile because it requires you to be logged in.

If Google could apply this preference across region, one could use multiple accounts within a region to prop up their site for that region.

I think this could be more useful for brand-focused sites than pure SEO plays.

If users actively choose a site as a preferred source, that says a lot about trust and loyalty. Curious to see how much impact it has outside of Top Stories.
