Vital Wordpress Plugins 2026/27?

I haven’t built a website since the glory days of PAA sites but I am looking at returning with a new business idea.

What plugins are necessary these days for SEO and speed. Are plugin still a thing or can you just AI all that side of things now

Plugins are definitely still a thing, but AI is changing the WordPress ecosystem pretty fast.

These days, you can literally vibe-code custom WordPress themes and plugins with AI, so you don't always need to rely on dozens of third-party plugins anymore.

WordPress itself is moving toward deeper AI integration with the WP AI Client, while Elementor's new agentic AI framework, Angie, is designed to go beyond generating text/images and actually help build things inside WordPress—including custom widgets, plugins and apps.

There are also tools like Shuffle.dev's WordPress AI Theme Builder and platforms such as Novamira that make generating custom themes/plugins much easier.

So IMO, the future isn't "AI replacing WordPress plugins completely"—it's more like fewer generic plugins and more custom functionality generated specifically for your website.

WordPress includes a basic XML sitemap at /wp-sitemap.xml by default, so you don't need a plugin just for that. Choose SEO tools for controls you need, such as per-page meta descriptions, and check your host's existing page caching before adding a speed plugin. Elementor with it's AI and UpdraftPlus are enough. You don't need to put too many plugins as they will slow down your site.
