With google’s AI Overviews (SGE) eating up the real estate, how are you guys optimizing for zero-click searches? Are you focusing more on long-tail intent that AI can't satisfy yet, or just pushing for brand mentions to get cited by gemini?

Hey, my best recommendation is to make material that is unique and valuable that answers problems in a natural way. Long-tail themes and smart opinions tend to do well, even with AI overviews. Building your brand presence will assist make sure people see and mention your work.

I focus on deep long-tail content that AI can’t fully answer and on building strong brand signals so my site gets cited. The goal is to be a trusted source, not just rank first.

I’m targeting long tail, problem-specific queries where people want real experiences, steps, or opinions stuff AI summaries from Google still struggle to satisfy fully. Those clicks are still there.

At the same time, I’m putting more effort into entity building and brand mentions so content has a better chance of being cited in AI Overviews or tools like Gemini. That means clearer author signals, unique data, and quotable insights instead of generic info.

So yeah less rank 1 and relax, more be the source AI wants to reference while capturing the deeper intent traffic it can’t answer well yet.

When the query is too generic, AI satisfies it; when it’s nuanced or experience-based, users still click through

So the play is covering long-tail intent with depth and unique perspective, not just longer keywords.

My suggestion for you is to focus on long tail intent keywords, simple helpful answers, and content. That will give you more detail than what google ai overview shows. Also work on brand mentions and trustworthy content, because ai search systems often cite sites with strong authority and clear information.

I noticed a correlation between backlinks and rankings in Google AI Overviews.

I tested it on a single-page website. I pushed it to the TOP using black-hat links and also created a separate llms.txt file for AI bots - it helps LLM bots better understand the content.

I’m not trying to fight zero-click directly.

broad informational stuff is getting eaten by AI, so I focus more on:

– commercial and comparison intent
– queries that require nuance or action
– building brand signals so we get cited

long-tail helps, but only if it’s something AI can’t fully answer in one block.

either you become the source AI pulls from, or you go after intent that still needs a click.

I'd like to discuss this in more detail. Would you be available as a PM?

i m not looking to compete against ai Overviews. it makes more sense to go after keywords that involve some comparison, verification or actual doing. examples, ideas nd experience matter more than keyword stuff for the sole purpose of a citation. if the result is already there in the SERP, maybe the query itself is not worth purssuing.

My focus is on both, but the priority has shifted a bit. I'm putting more effort into long tail, highly specific queries right now, because AI Overviews still struggle with anything nuanced or based on my exact situation that's where organic content still wins. At the same time, I haven't dropped the citation game either. Getting picked up by AI Overviews or Gemini usually comes down to the same fundamentals: original data, clear structure tables, step by step breakdowns and strong entity/brand signals. Honestly it's less a separate strategy and more just doing E-E-A-T really well which naturally makes content more "AI citable" too. And since clicks alone don't tell the full story anymore, I've started tracking impressions and branded search growth as a better signal of whether this is actually working.
