why do my edited videos still look amateurish ?

I think I’m pretty decent at video editing, but my finished products always seem to look a bit “casual.” What, in your opinion, makes an amateur edit look different from a professional one?

Timing, distance, and balance, is something you should be aware in all aspects of your video, have everything looks and itneracts itself on the micro and macro level. Go watch some videos that you see that impress you, and you should shout out "yipeekiyah" every time you see them changing some aspect of the video that isn't the flow of the video, instead something like the sounds, the brightness, the introduction of new aspects, speed, clipart type emoji, as many things as possilbe you'll notice. Write these down and copy them with variations, as if you were rewriting an article in your own handwriting.

I think one of the biggest differences is consistency and restraint.


Amateur edits often try to make every shot interesting — more transitions, effects, zooms, text, etc. Professional edits usually have a clearer visual hierarchy and only use those things when they actually serve the content.


I'd also pay attention to consistency in typography, spacing, sound levels, color and motion. Even small inconsistencies across different shots can make a video feel “off”.


One thing that helped me a lot was taking a professional video I liked and going through it frame by frame. Not to copy the effects, but to understand why each cut, movement and sound change happens where it does.

Understanding how to cut well and apply professional transitions, your color correction(grading) and timely inserted B-rolls. These and others will amp your editing some notches

tbh sound design is the biggest giveaway. you can have the cleanest color grade but if the audio is flat or has harsh cuts between clips it just feels cheap... J-cuts and L-cuts help a lot with making things flow naturally.
