Anyone have a good way of finding expired domains without spending hours checking garbage?

I’ve been looking at expired domains for a project and the amount of junk in the results is ridiculous.

A domain can have decent metrics, but then I check the history and find spam, hacked pages, unrelated languages, or hundreds of sketchy backlinks.

I’m mainly looking for domains with:

• a clean history
• relevant backlinks
• some real previous content
• no obvious spam
• preferably some existing authority

I know tools like Ahrefs and similar platforms can help, but I’m wondering what your actual process looks like before buying one.

Do you check everything manually, or do you have a filtering method that removes most of the bad domains first?

Would really appreciate any workflow, tool, or even a checklist you guys use.

Trying to avoid learning the expensive way by buying a bunch of dead domains that looked good on paper.

My biggest filter is relevance. A domain with fewer links but a clean history and links from related sites is usually more interesting than a high-DR domain full of unrelated anchors.
