Hopefully not too stupid of a question, My account is fairly new I'm just recommending them a site i run that is a potentially better for them.
How many messages should i send a day to people on reddit ?

Big fat 0. Unless you are experienced with good karma, and there is an open invite for bidders of the content you are supplying. You can't just stalk a certain post, and keep messaging people who are active in it. Also to say "your site is better" is a bold claim. If its really a crock of shit, then people will be mad reporting you.
The best way to promote is to say something like "I've been using x site, does the job, and is pretty good" and then move on. There are plenty of places to promote sites with value on reddit. Its not worth getting your account banned for cold DM activity.

Sending cold DMs to random users on reddit is a shortcut to getting shadow banned almost instantly. If your account is new even sending 2-3 self promotional messages a day will trigger the automated spam filters. Instead of messaging people directly engage in subreddits where people actively ask for recommendations and drop helpful comments with value first.

Ain’t a stupid question but be careful as your account is new. Dropping links to your site will be immediately flagged as spam.
Even if it's helpful, wait until your account has some age before dropping links, or you'll get banned.

2-3 messages per day are optimal. Any more than that can get you shadow banned.

Don't send a single DM.
Sending DMs from a newer account is one of the fastest ways to get your profile flagged. Reddit’s spam detection is extremely strict right now.
On top of that, if you try creating a new account on the same IP or device where a previous account got banned, their system detects it as ban evasion and the new account usually gets taken down within a few days.
It's definitely not worth the risk.

For a new Reddit account I'd keep it to 3-5 highly relevant DMs per day at first. Don't mass-massage; only contact people where your site genuinely solves something they've mentioned.

The daily number matters less than who is on the other end. Three messages to people who asked for exactly what you have behaves nothing like three to random users, even though the count is identical. With a narrow niche that works in your favour, since the few who do ask are the ones worth reaching. Filters react to the pattern, not the total.

You'll risk your account and get it banned.
You need to grow your account by engaging natural fot a long while. Consistently spamming people even with an established account would lead to a ban.

to me, the number of follower does not matter as much as relevance. as for the new account, I'm sure that I will refrain from sending cold DMs and will start commenting first.

There’s 0 chance of you being able to do this consistently with a new account. Reddit isn’t that easy to run mass DMs in anymore. You’ll need a botnet of aged/warmed accounts, which you rotate while sending out DMs. You’ll also need to make sure that each of those accounts run completely isolated.

first try to raise your karma by posting helpful replies, once you have enough karma slow roll the messages, and keep it to around 3 per day or less
