Is it right to say that many people don't want to live in this reality anymore?

I see many fanatical people watching animes, movies, series, playing games, reading books (less common) all day, especially young generations. Not as a distraction, but in an unhealthy way, without time limits, just playing or watching indefinitely, which generated terms like "binge watching" and "bed rotting", very common in these days. Not to say about zombie scrolling.

Also, searches about "how to control your dreams", "how to have a lucid dream" and terms like that are increasing, many people prefer to stay asleep rather than awake.

People want to live in that anime or in that game world as much as they can, millions of people don't want to live in this reality anymore. When they finally turn their screens off, they need to deal with a world full of micro transactions, big tech exploiting your privacy, AI slop everywhere and all kind of imaginable decadence in this tech hell.

Do you agree that many people don't want to live in this reality anymore? Maybe this is one of the reasons that billionaires are trying to push metaverse, virtual reality and other simulations, so you don't need to live in this world anymore.

With the rapid ascent of AI, its fake images and footage, you could argue that increasingly people won't even know what is or isn't real anymore, so I can well understand people somewhat retreating into a world or hobbies of their own choosing. It's part of the whole 'dead internet theory' angle that feeds into the idea that you can't or soon won't really ever be able to trust what you see, or if you're even communicating with a real person.

Funny really, that a distrust of the 'mainstream' (news channels etc) , led to an overtrust of online (as people feel like they've a curator of their experience, rather than just stuck within an algorithm). I think if people can combine their hobbies and interests with real world interactions that ground them and give them a sense of community, that's possibly a healthier mix and life than what many of us currently are subjected to, and subject ourselves too.

Yeah, I’ve noticed this too. It’s so easy to start scrolling or watching something and suddenly a couple hours are gone lol.

Maybe it's true, but we don't have enough technology capabilities for that. Metaverse was a complete failure, they promised an alternative reality and they delivered a 2D low quality world.

Plus I'm not sure it's so much that people want to live in something that's not real. It's more that they have become detached from a 'reality' they no longer believe in. Their hobbies and interests are what is real to them.

I don’t think most people literally want to die or disappear, but a lot of people definitely seem tired of dealing with real life and want to escape from it as much as possible.

You're definitely onto something there. Escapism is at an all time high right now. When everyday life starts to feel like a nonstop 12 hour grind, losing yourself in a game or a show becomes the easiest way to cope.

For most people it is probably less about rejecting reality altogether and more about needing a real break from all the noise and stress. Big tech clearly sees how profitable that urge to check out can be, which is exactly why endless feeds and virtual worlds keep getting pushed so hard. It is a completely natural response to an exhausting world.

why would I want to live in this shitty world if I can watch hentai, play pokemon and stay on my bed scratching my balls?
Because all of that exists in this world for you to watch, play, smoke, and scratch. Only this crazy reality could come up with that, you could never dream it up yourself!

Echo chambers are the preference of big tech, or at least social media companies, and that they themselves remove nuance from reality. The world they create, as a distraction, is often one of fighting a perceived enemy , or opposite. So I feel like hobbies and interests that are non political but sometimes can still offer a connection between people (if they share the interest), or at least an escape, are desirable to many and in their own way as real if not more so than alternatives.

You make a good point when you say that big tech knows this and tries to construct worlds and ways to capture this kind of person too.

You have lots of research and experience about latest traffic trends on internet... If the OP @UrbanSnake has plans to become paid member of BHW then I might hire the OP for keywords research in March 2027... Just 5 to 7 months away to expand my team.

Yeah, this reality world feels increasingly empty as less humanity, respect, and genuine connection, while virtual worlds let you build your own life sytle without work pressure, manager bullshit, and all everyday crap.

I agree that escapism is becoming more common, especially with endless entertainment and social media. But I think it’s less about people completely rejecting reality and more about seeking relief from stress, loneliness, or dissatisfaction. VR and the metaverse may amplify this trend, but they can also be useful tools. The bigger issue is maintaining a healthy balance between digital experiences and real life.
