Why Is My 20-Day-Old Website Not Ranking for Its Main Keyword Even Though Less-Relevant Sites Are Ranking?

I have a website that is only 20 days old. For my main keyword, such as “[service name] in [city]”, my website doesn’t appear anywhere within the first 10 pages of Google. However, when I search the same keyword, I see several websites that are only loosely related to the query ranking around pages 3–4.

Why is Google ranking these less-relevant websites while my website, which is directly relevant to the search term, doesn’t appear in the top 100 results at all? Is this normal for a new website, and what factors determine when Google will start showing my site for the main keyword?

20 days is still very early, especially for a competitive local keyword. I’d focus on building relevance, internal links, and a few quality local signals rather than judging the site too quickly.
 
20 days is nothing for Google to fully trust a new domain — that's normal 'sandbox' behavior. The less-relevant sites ranking above you likely just have stronger backlink profiles or domain history, even if their content matches worse. Relevance gets you eligible, but authority signals (backlinks, age, trust) often outweigh it early on. Keep building content and start light backlink work now instead of waiting it out passively.
 
Relevance is only one part of ranking. Google also has to build confidence in the site, so an older less-relevant page can still rank above a new site.
 
New websites usually have 3-6 months sandbox period. So, it may take some time for your website to rank.

Will it definitely rank after the sandbox period? We can't definitely say so. There are several ranking factors like site authority and relevance. You need to keep pushing for it to rank better.

20 days is too early even now. it is possible that google recognizes the importance of ur website but does not trust the webssite enough to give it a ranking. the less authoritative sites seem more likely to have higher authority nd history behind them.
 
Yes, it’s normal for a 20-day old site. Google needs time to crawl, understand and trust the site, while older sites may already have stronger authority and backlinks.

Keep building relevant content, local signals and quality backlinks the rankings should start appearing as the site gains trust.
 
20 days old n not even crackin top 100 is normal, those "loosely related" sites beatin u on pg 3-4 almost certainly just have age or backlink history on their side, not better relevance
