Why do we intend to scroll through TikTok for five minutes but end up spending an hour?

You are a lazy fool scrolling all day long because you are a sheep and use social media wrong.

Do you think you spend an hour on TikTok because the algorithm is too good, or because we ourselves lack a stopping point?
Prolly 70% algorithm and 30% our own fault. The algorithm is crazy good but we’re the ones who open the app and keep swiping for hours when we should've put the phone down.

Because each video is so short, you don't really sense the passage of time. A single swipe takes only a few seconds, but it can add up to an entire hour.

That is indeed what the experience often feels like. Whatever I pause to watch, skip, or interact with helps the system better understand my preferences.

I actually think the issue isn't that the videos are short, but rather that the next video might be even better than the current one. It’s that feeling of "just one more" that makes it so hard to stop. What do you all think?
Actually, I disagree. I believe the thought that "the next video might be even better" holds a stronger pull than thinking "this video is really great." An excellent video gives you a sense of satisfaction, whereas curiosity about the next one is what keeps you scrolling. Those are two completely different things.

Tech companies use the psychology of gambling machines to make your algo addictive.

Honestly, i think it's both TikTok is designed to keep you scrolling, but setting a timer or having a clear reason to open the app can help avoid losing an hour.

I think our minds can enter a kind of absorbed state where we lose track of time and just get carried away by the continuous flow of content.

My friend, look these 1% "elite" people have big big data clusters form all humans on planet earth , since thousands of years- "they" are masters of manipulation, mastermind, psychology, they know how to controll the "apes" who are created from the Gods, fallen form heaven....

Analyze , read slow the bible again, or quran, better the Gilgamesh epos...... where most of it was scraped, copied from the bible authors, then you will see clearly their meticulous mind of cntrol and manipulation. This was 6000 years back, but the earth is much much older, there is proof of science, but the "self chosen" elite denied this till today or tell you it's a mystic number these 6000 years....yadda,yadda.....

These people know to controll and manipulate the mass.

Happy Sunday and Peace !

These type of platforms are built to keep you engaged, it’s the whole point. That’s why advertisers pay big bags of money to be able to drive traffic through them.

TikTok is designed to remove boredom instantly, so five minutes can easily turn to an hour before you even notice.

Just uninstall all this garbage, do yourself a favor...replace all those social media garbage by Tinder, Bumble, etc and go bang some hot widows or divorced old ladies

both. the algorithm keeps testing fresh reward signals and the endless feed removes every natural stopping point

i think.the algorithm keeps showing you something new or slightly interesting and the endless scroll makes it harder to find a natural stopping point like you would with most other activities.
