A recent study found 62% of the links cited in AI Overviews come from outside the top 10.
This means a page ranking at position 15 can appear in the AI answer, while the number 1 result gets left out.
.
The data also shows a shift in what AI uses as sources.
According to McKinsey, a brand's own website makes up only 5 to 10% of the sources AI pulls from.
The rest comes from third-party content. Other websites, forums, videos, and news mentioning the brand.
.
Tracking of this remains low.
Only around 14% of marketers currently track whether AI tools mention their brand.
The majority have no data on whether AI recommends them or a competitor.
.
A note on the data.
These figures come from separate studies with different data sets. They should not be read as a single fixed Google rule.
The pattern is still forming, and there is no confirmed method to control AI citations yet.
