Do you connect with people first or engage with their LinkedIn content before sending a request?

I have seen different approaches to networking on LinkedIn.

Some people send a connection request right away, while others spend a few days liking or commenting on someone's posts before reaching out.

From your experience, which approach has worked better for building genuine professional connections, and why?

I usually send connection requests directly, but I think your approach of engaging with their content first by liking or commenting is a better way to build a connection.

try engaging first with thoughtful comments rather than making any cold requests once you engage there will be some degree of familiarity rather than a complete stranger making a request.

Engage first, but for a reason nobody's given. LinkedIn caps your weekly invites and watches your acceptance rate. Cold requests get ignored, accept rate drops, cap tightens. So warming isn't manners. It protects the thing that limits how much outreach you can do at all. And put a note on the request. Always.

I think a mix of both works best, but I prefer engaging first. A few genuine comments on someone's posts makes the connection request feel more natural and less like a random add.

That being said, don't overthink it. If you have a good reason to connect, just send the request and personalize the message. The goal isn't collecting connections, it's building actual relationships.

my efforts have been more successful whenever I engaged with someone first.just a couple of likes or even a comment makes the connection feel more organic.people are much more inclined to accept your request after they already heard of you rather than being contacted in a totally cold approach.

I usually prefer engaging with their posts first, especially if they share useful content. Then the connection request feels more natural, and you have something real to talk about instead of just adding another contact.

If your content does not resonate with me or that I find what you do appealing enough, I only like and maybe drop a comment. But if it makes sense, I engage then connect because I found you a valuable resource

First i see whether there is anything that we have in common in terms of our professional interests before making contact otherwise, it seems like an unnecessary connection.

Tbh Initially i used to send direct connection requests, which rarely helped me but now i prefer engaging to their content first. & Indeed 2nd one is much better for long term connectionm building.

warm approach wins every single time. cold connection requests without prior touchpoints usually end up in the "Ignore" pile or trigger LinkedIn's "I don't know this person" flag if u hit limits. u can drop a thoughful comment on their post first, wait a day then hit connect with a short personalized note referencing their content

Engaging with someone's content before sending a connection request consistently yields higher acceptance rates and warmer conversations, as it builds familiarity before asking for their time.

I triess to see whether there is any reason to connct at all as a message that relates to what they do gets a better response than just liking them randomly and then pitching some thing.

Honestly i first see if there ws something in common, and then make the request for a connection giving the person a gd reason why they would like to be connected.

If there is any thing to comment on from their posts then i will do so because getting likes just to build rapport seems to be pointless if uhh ask me.

I try to engage positively with their content first, because after that you can build trust with them, and ask them if they have problems that you can solve for money using your products or services.
