In a lot of cases, for one particular subject there can be multiple subreddits, but with varying rule sets and audiences

How do you determine which subreddit is most appropriate for posting a particular question or topic?

I usually check the recent posts first the type of discussions getting traction there tells you pretty quickly whether your topic fits

I usualliy go with the most popular / most visited

I always check the rules before posting. A perfect topic can still get removed if it doesn't match the sub rules.

I usually check the rules first, then look at the top and recent posts to see what kind of stuff actually gets engagement there. Two subs can cover the same topic but have completely different audiences, so I’d pick the one where my post feels most natural.

You might find this thread useful.. I covered how I usually research subreddits

The best way to choose a subreddit is to find a place where the audience's interests align with your question, rather than simply picking one with a name that closely resembles the topic.

I usually use Google search operators like site:reddit.com "keyword" or tools like Subreddit Stats and Anvaka's Reddit map. Searching natively inside Reddit often misses smaller, active sub-communities.

You can now use Reddit answers which looks like a ChatGPT UI, basically ask whatever and it scrapes through different sub reddits for you and shares the links to them if you are wanting to expand further into the info. Very good, i use it a lot for work for customer reviews about products etc
