I’ve been wondering about this lately.

A #1 organic position is still great, but if users are getting their answers directly from AI Overviews does that ranking carry the same value as it used to?

Would you personally trade a #1 Google ranking for strong visibility and mentions inside AI-generated results or would you still take #1 every time?

Curious what everyone is seeing with their own sites.

Honestly, I'd trade a standard number one organic ranking for a strong AI Overview citation on most informational queries right now.

The reality in 2026 is that AI summaries show up on nearly half of all searches, and they pull a ton of traffic away from traditional organic links. Data shows the click rate for a top organic spot can drop by around 60 percent when an AI summary is present. If people get their answers right at the top of the page, they just don't bother scrolling down to click.

That said, the traffic you get from being cited inside an AI Overview is usually way higher quality. Users who actually click through those citations are digging deeper and tend to convert at much higher rates.

The main exception is purely transactional searches. If someone's ready to buy a product, a standard number one spot is still incredibly valuable. But for anything involving research or answering questions, being the cited source is definitely the new top prize.

I’d focus more on conversions than visibility. A #1 ranking means little if users never need to click.

I’d still take the #1 ranking, but I wouldn’t ignore AI visibility. Google rankings bring direct traffic, while being mentioned in AI answers helps build brand trust and visibility. Ideally, you want both rather than choosing one.

I think google rankings still bring good traffic, but AI visibility is becoming important too. so both are improtant.

my opinion B2B Organic ranking and B2C need both AI & Organic

Its not about choosing this or that. Its about your website and the search intent you are targeting. For example. infomational queries, AI overviews can reduce clicks of #1 ranking sites. For commercial and transactional keywords ranking #1 is still the highest priority also being cited in AI search is an added advantage. The best long-term strategy i recommend to my clients is to optimize for both.

Focus on both. A #1 ranking still brings trust and clicks, while AI Overview mentions can add visibility. Being useful and easy to understand matters most.

I wouldn't choose one over the other. We're seeing that strong organic rankings still help, but getting mentioned in AI Overviews is becoming just as important for visibility.

We've been working more on brand mentions and topical authority, and we've seen some positive movement in AI results even for competitive keywords. So for me the goal now is to have the site visible in both.

Great topic. I see AI Overviews as an opportunity, but I wouldn't ignore organic rankings. A balanced SEO strategy seems like the safest approach.

Honestly I stopped chasing #1 for half my keywords this year. That answer surprised me too.

Here is what changed my mind.
I had a page sitting at position one for a solid informational keyword. Good volume. Stable ranking for over a year. Then AI Overviews rolled out properly and my traffic on that page dropped 60% while the ranking never moved. Still number one. Still getting almost nothing.

That was the moment I realised the position and the traffic are two different things now.

So which matters more?
Depends entirely on what the person is searching for.
Someone typing "what is X" or "how does X work" gets their answer inside the Overview and never clicks anything. Ranking first for those queries in 2026 is like winning a race nobody is watching. The trophy is real. The reward isn't.

Someone typing "best X for Y" or "X vs Z" still clicks through. They want to compare, read, decide. AI can't close that for them. Position one on those keywords still prints.

What I actually do now
For informational content I write to get cited inside the Overview, not just to rank. Short direct answers early in the article. Clean structure. Specific facts Google can pull cleanly. The citation gets seen by more people than the organic click ever did.

For commercial content I still fight hard for position one. That traffic converts and the Overview shows up less on buying intent queries anyway.

Would I trade #1 for an AI Overview mention?

On an informational keyword, yes without hesitation.

On a keyword with real buying intent behind it, never.

The ranking still matters. It just doesn't mean what it used to mean for every keyword type. took me a while and a 60% traffic drop to fully accept that.

I would still take the #1 organic ranking, but i would not ignore AI overviews.
AI visibility is becoming an important layer of SEO.
Organic position drives clicks but AI generated answers can build visibility & trust.

IMO, best strategy 2026 is to optimize for both.

Both matter, but optimizing for AI overviews helps capture immediate top-of-page visibility while organic rankings build long-term site authority.

AI Overviews are reducing clicks for informational queries. The #1 organic position still has value, but its direct traffic potential has decreased. For commercial queries, the ranking still matters. For informational ones, visibility in AI snippets may now carry more weight.

Good question, and honestly I don't think it's an either/or choice. AI Overviews and organic #1 rankings are closely correlated for authority and trust; they largely feed off the same foundation, so the regular SEO work you do to build authority and visibility is exactly what earns you a shot at both.

AI Overviews tend to favor content that's well-structured and clearly answers the query, so it's less about chasing AI visibility separately and more about making your content authoritative enough to get pulled in as a source. Bottom line: keep doing the solid work; both tend to follow from the same effort.

It all depends on the niche or market you're working in. Some niches don't even have overviews, and it's not practical to create them. Even if you get number one in the SERP, CTR depends on the niche. But of course, whether you dominate the overview or the SERP, it still matters, and the strategies to use are the same.

AI Overviews matter more for top-of-funnel visibility and brand discovery, while organic rankings remain vital for high-intent, transactional traffic.
