What's the cheapest and most valuable link building strategy for grey hat niche?

Im starting a movie site soon and wondering how can I rank it without spending $100 for one link? Checked the marketplace and saw many are selling $1$ and $5 links even in bulk.

Just wondering is it possible to even gain a little traffic with these profile,forum,web2.0s or all are money wasting.

I'm looking for a real answer here please

dont blast those cheap dollar links directly to your money site man... google ignores basic profile links in competitive niches like movies

If you're looking for a cheaper long-term approach, I’d focus on building PBN-type sites as assets rather than spending $100+ on every single link.

Basic approach:
→ Pick up expired domains with decent history/metrics, or start with fresh domains if the budget is tight.
→ For hosting, Cloudflare can be a good low-cost/free option depending on the setup. You can also mix in properties like Blogger, Tumblr, etc.
→ Build each site properly. Keep it clean, niche-relevant, and make it look like a real website rather than something created only for backlinks.
→ Start with branded/foundation links and give the sites some time to settle.

Once everything is set up, you can build supporting links to strengthen those properties:

- 100s of profile links
- Niche-relevant forum/profile links
- Around 30–40 Web 2.0 properties
- Other relevant foundational links where they make sense

The idea isn't that a random $1 profile link will suddenly rank your movie site.

Instead, use cheaper links as part of a tiered structure to strengthen assets you control. Over time, those sites can become much more valuable because you're building your own link network rather than continuously renting expensive links from other people.

If you're going down this route, focus on quality, relevance, indexing, and making the PBN sites look legitimate instead of simply blasting thousands of links.

I wouldn’t recommend cheap gray hat techniques to you at all In the past, I ranked a movie website although it was a small scale site. I can share the approach I used to rank it while spending $0 on backlinks.

Small thing you can do is analyze your competitors’ backlinks to see what types of links they are building. If they have profiles, forum backlinks, business listings, or social links from certain websites, you can check those sources and potentially replicate the legitimate opportunities that are relevant to your own site.

you can follow this simple trick I did that, and I got result from that back in the days

such links will never bring traffic, they might marginally help long term with seo, nothing else

the cheap links arent the problem. pointing them at your money site is.

for a movie site you are never getting editorial links anyway, nobody is writing a guest post about a streaming site. so the question isnt cheap vs expensive, its where they land.

build a handful of properties you control, web 2.0s, parasites, whatever. those point at the money site. then the dollar links, profiles, forum stuff, all of that goes at those properties instead. cheap links are fine as fuel, theyre just terrible as a final layer.

thats also why the same links do nothing for one guy and work for another. its not link quality, its position.

100% Agreed!

$1 links pointed straight at a brand new movie site is wasted money, but those same links have a real job further down the chain.

Cheapest thing that actually works in a niche like that is to stop buying per link and buy the tools once. GSA SER or Ranker X , a decent list, xevil for captchas, a few proxies and a small vps. I grabbed an 8gb vps for around $120 for the year. After that your cost per link is basically nothing, and it doesn't go up when you add sites, which is the part people miss when they compare it to marketplace pricing.

Structure matters more than the spend though. Build a handful of properties you control first, web 2.0s or cheap expired domains, real content on them, let them settle. Those point at the movie site. Then everything automated goes at those properties. Volume behind assets you own is fine, volume straight at a money site in a niche google already watches is not.

Don't use cheap backlinks directly on the money site. It will affect your website, and it won't help much.

Profile and forum links can still help with referral traffic when they’re placed on active, relevant communities, while Web 2.0s can have more value when they contain useful content and are part of a broader strategy.

The cheap links aren’t completely useless, but expecting them alone to generate traffic is where most people waste money.
